Alternative battery starting methods

In a related side from my previous post on the seat, I originally wanted to "float" my battery with a battery tender (I have two to choose from) but the night before I left to go to Houston to process out to Afghanistan I attempted to get the seat off and found the situation as described in the "seat" post.

I figured that between my wife and two sons that if they started it each week and ran it for a few minutes that the battery would stay charged up. Somehow "they" managed to leave something on (I suspect) and the battery ended up dead.

I have the A/C accessory BMW plug on the side cover (with the "americanized" adapter) and was wondering if there is a way to plug something in to it to "energize" that battery to get the beast started so that I can get it to the dealer (who may have been the ones who caused the "missing" pull ring to happen and let them fix it or fish it out.

Any ideas in that direction???

Thanks Tony, that is similar to what I had in mind, went ahead and ordered it, should be in by the time I get home.

Pig9r, thanks also for your suggestion, it hadn't appeared yet when I ordered Tony's recommendation, but it must have been the same time as I was replying to it.

I'm going to go ahead and order the one you recommended as well so that when I leave to come back on the 15th of March I'll hook up my battery tender with that hook up and let it trickle charge till the end of June when I will make a return trip to the US to help stimulate the economy as only I can (Ha!).

I believe the alternator output sufficient to charge the battery is achieved near 1500 rpm sustained? Otherwise starting up the beast and running a "few" minutes at idle is/was the drain.

Beware of 2amp chargers. I've wasted two batteries in as many years by over charging for too long a period. Stock Yuasa batteries are rated 1.8a for 9 hours max.
 
HeR3tic, thanks for that info, but I thought that if it is set for "trickle charge" it should be fine.

On that note does Yuasa or anybody produce a charger that does the 1.8 amp at 9 hours? I think that would be what I would want to use on an initial charge of a completely new battery.

There certainly are "smart chargers" that won't overcharge a small mc battery. My only charger, at this time, is a multi-level auto battery charger. This unit has a 50amp car starter setting on it and has come to the rescue for my cold dead Rocket battery. a time or two. BTW, some MC batteries, such as the Odessa 625 are rated for two amps but still not for extended duration. The 625 I received recently won't fit the Rocket w/o serious modifications to the mounting box. I jumped before I looked further than the recommendations given herein.:rolleyes:

I keep my bike on a battery tender all winter. Recently when I went to change the oil to get ready for the spring, I tried to start it and it would not turn over fast enough to the the old girl going. I had to put a fast charge in it for about half an hour. I don't think the BT is all that it is cracked up to be.
