Yeh,,,forums are not all alike>>>
I am a member of at least 15 different forums that are not motorcyle related. I am a GM tech with 38 years under my belt and I know the product that I work on very well. I will give you an example: A friend of mine has an 011 Camaro that he wanted built to kick the **** out of his co-workers new 500hp mustang. He brought me the specs (off of a forum) and asked me what I thought. I looked it over and told him he wouldn't be happy with it. End result...he shipped the car out, spent $8K , and now has a car that gets a consistent 15mpg, has marginal driveability, makes 610hp at the wheels on motor (no NOS, turbo, supercharger). His wife, who is a motorhead, refuses to drive it because of its nasty manners.....won't idle, have to feather throttle under 2Krpm. He took a nice HP car and ruined it because he performed a race and track build on something he wanted to run primarily on the street. This type of advice is free and VERY plentiful on forums of all sorts.
My advice is: BE sure of where your info comes from. I subscribed to this forum for 6 months before I contributed. By that time I knew who were the BSers and who were not. I get very irritated at those that do no diagnosis or don't even have an accurate symptom before they post. Many that post on this forum either have first hand info because they have DONE it or they cite info from service information. I commend this forum for the plentiful supply of GOOD info.
History: I bought my 03 America because it reminded me of what I wanted my 71 Bonneville to look like. Don't get me wrong, I had a love-hate relationship with my 71 triumph.....some of you may remember LUCAS ignition and lighting systems (my bud, who rode a BSA named lucas "prince of darkness"). We never left home without a tow strap, because inevitably one of us would have to tow the other in. If it wasn't electrical then it was the **** Amal carbs or the continual oil leaks....bla, bla, bla. If someone offered me my old triumph back,,,I would take it and simply put it on display in the shop. I have no urge anymore to work on them more than ride them. Automatic cam chain adjusters, EFI and shaft drive and good brakes have spoiled me>>>>>and I love it!! The 08 touring is just an overall pleasure to ride, AND I have several of my "Horley" buds who are thinkin about a change of horse.
Sorry about running off at the mouth, but this forum has some VERY knowledgable contributors, so those of you that are new to it, pay attention,,,,you WILL learn. Please watch out for those contributors that are uninformed and for lack of a better word STUPID. This also goes for other forums also!!!
