Hi all, wiped my 2013 Rocket Roadster down last night, all nice and clean. Took her out today for a spirited 40/50 mile ride, cruised around 70/80/90. Got home and found oil on final drive side of rear wheel, on wheel, and streaks where it had spun up and off the side of the tire. Not a bunch, just very noticable. Ran my hand under the final drive, and got sme black gunk, and some almost clear oil? Seems to be coming from a rectangular opening on the bottom of the final drive case? Any clues or ideas? Wonder if there's supposed to be a rubber/ plastic cap on that opening? Talked to my dealer, and told them I'd clean it up, check the fluid level, and decide if I want to drive it down there 40/50 miles, or have them pick it up.:confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused:

according to my book the box only holds 170ml . that is not very much. if i was going to try to drive it in i would carry a liter/quart and a wrench, funnel and stop about every 20 miles. if you filed it at 20 miles you could judge how much it is using.
it might be safer to put it on a trailer

Well, I cleaned it up, but haven't done anything else yet. Will check fluid level tomorrow. I think I have a very good dealer, just don't know them yet. You hear so many stories. I bought the 5 year extended tire and wheel warranty, seemed like a good idea. However when I asked if they had a service, to pick up the bike off the side of the road, if necessary, and they said "NO". However today when I phoned, the guy asked if I wanted them to pick it up, so that might be the deal. As long as they ain't going to charge me for the pick up. I wish someone else would feel under the final drive, and see if they have the same rectangular opening on the bottom. Can't get my head low enough to see, without jacking the bike up, but it feels like about an inch or so opening, on the bottom, closer to the inside than the outside. I'll post my findings tomorrow.:p

OK, found a pic on egay that shows the opening where the oil was coming from. Guess there is no plug etc. for that rectangular opening?

Well, that's what the service guy thought it might be. However, after a bit over 1000 miles, I wonder why it just today showed up? And it was almost clear oil, like engine oil, and no 90 weight stink. No other signs of a leak anywhere, and after I wiped it all off, nothing has reappeared at that opening. But of course I haven't run it yet. If the level is OK, I'll just keep an eye on it. Tomorrow will tell. Thanks guys. I LOVE MY ROCKET!:D

A quick word of caution. The torque for the filler/level bolt is 60 nm (44 ft/lb.) The torque for the drain bolt is only 15 nm ( 11 ft/lb ) and is very easy to snap as it is hollow with a magnet inside. Just in case you were considering "snugging" these bolts up.

I WOULD TAKE A MIRROR AND A GOOD FLASHLIGHT AND CHECK UNDER DIFF AND ALSO UNDER ENGINE AREA . you good take a picture through the mirror SOMETIMES A NEW ENGINE WILL KICK OUT OIL OUT THE BREATHERS OR PCV. LOOK IT OVER REAL GOOD THE OIL MIGHT BE BLOWING BACK.
I DOUBT THAT THAT RECTANGLE HAS ANY PLUGS IN IT. sorry for caps. i would take it to dealer and have it checked out so your guarantee be good. if you don't and something serious happens they could void guarantee.

OK Rocket pilots. I dunno:confused: Took her out for a ride, bumped the limiter a few times, up to 110 once. Came home, and EVERYTHING is dust dry! The day I noticed the oil, I had run her up to 130, which is the fastest I've had her to, so far. Soooo maybe that slung some of that cosmoline out. The whole bottom of the engine, and all the vent hoses, are bone dry. Sorry to have bothered ya-all.:D
