'06 Oil Cap mishap

'06 Triumph Rocket III
So this just happened. Doing a precheck before a ride tomorrow (first real ride in months), and the cap to the oil cap, the part with the temp sensor & battery separated from the base. And now, even if I do solder the wires back in place, I can't get the cap to fit on nice and snuggly. The base still fits in the tank nice and tight, obviously, but I just can't wedge the temp cap back on sufficiently. Am I missing something obvious in snapping it back together?

I've tried it nearly every whichaway. Bugger just won't snap back on.
 
It just snaps and twists back together. This is normal and how you change the battery. Not sure how else to describe it. It does take a bit of force but no more than say the strength of your palm of your hand
