Old man on a bike
Remember me, the guy who was always making something for his R3T. I made and sold a lot of those wind deflectors that fit on your windshield among other things. Well, I've decided to get at it with my new R3GT. I have a Madstad windshield on my bike, but I'm getting a lot of airflow coming up from around my turn signals and front forks. I decided to experiment with a little lower project to see if I could cut some of it back. What you see here are... some fork clamps I bought, some cover plates, "my old leftover R3T lowers" that I I had laying around, and some fastening arms I fabricated out of some 1/8th X 3/4 in aluminum. The fork clamps are 58mm which is what the forks measure, but I find them to be a little bit of a tight fit. I have some 60mm's on order to see if they are a better fit. THIS IS NOT THE FINAL LOWER, but you get the idea. Lots of painting to do, a pattern that I more than likely will use (pictured), and nicer screws. A note on the pattern...I have a cutaway on the pattern for the turn signals, but I may not need it. I'm just using my old lowers for testing. I don't want to muck my bike up, but I think they will fit in pretty good. And NO, I do not want to make these for people.
Those little arms are a pain to make.
UPDATE: This is not my final post, but I thought I would post some pictures of where I am at with my lowers. I have them the temporarily mounted, the protective paper is still on the plastic, all the aluminum will be painted black, I bought some really nice flat head screws for everything along with washers and locknuts. The plastic lowers may change in size and design a bit as the pieces of shatter resistant plastic was all I had and not quite the size I wanted. I had to remake two of the twisted aluminum arms because I needed opposite twists to get the lowers to swing back the same on the opposite side. I use 60mm clamps instead of 58mm and put a thin strip of rubber grip tape with adhesive on one side on the inside of the clamps to avoid scratches on the tubes. That's about it until I do my final post.
