How do I clean Amal floats

As a vintage Triumph kind of guy, I've been watching this thread to see what kind of responses Tazmandoo gets, and as usual, it turns into one with some good recommendations but also with the usual dose of irreverence and fun.

With all that said, if you have the original carbs there could be more problems than floats, such as the throttle slides. Because the Amals are pot metal with pot metal slides, they wear much sooner than the Japanese carbs and become problematic. Erratic idle is one of the first indicators of wear.

There are machinest sources that can bore the throats and stainless wrap the slides but the procedure sometimes approaches the cost of a new carb.

I recall that I paid about $150 for Concentrics a few years ago but, well inflation takes its toll, and a quick check on ebay indicates they are upwards of $185-$200. Within the past few years new manufacture Monoblocs have also become available for considerably higher price, close to $300.

The BSA Rocket and the Triump Trident came with Concentrics with the newly manufactured Amals built to resist the corrosive effects of ethanol fuels.
