RamAir filter for Touring model ?

They're definitely not made in China, I've been to the factory and it wasn't that far from home. :whitstling:

As far as I know the base is moulded silicone rubber which by its nature is 'slippery', so would agree about cleaning all surfaces.

I found it was too easy to not have it seated right and over-tighten the clips - mainly slightly up at the back which made it lift further when tightening. Plus the clips have to be really loose to start with to allow spigots tubes to expand over the bodies.
 
Since this is an " under claw " design it leaves me several options. I don't intend on depending on the boots and clamps alone. I will post an update of what I decide to do to secure it a little better.

It's cheap and it works. I might suggest using wire ties to hold it down as I did, then tighten all clamps after making sure filter is seated correctly, then cutting the wire ties after you're done if you don't like them. You can't see this under the claw so I'm leaving it be. Bike ran like a scalded RAT. I did notice the knocking sound coming from the intakes and that took a bit of getting used to but she's not sluggish at all anymore. Matter of fact, there's a dyno shop less than a mile from my work I may visit this week or next. I'll just tell my riding buddies that knock sound they hear are the remnants of the last Harley she ate rolling around in her belly. ;)
 
To Gearbox and DRMD421: Tell us about the difference in noise (valve clatter and whistling). Have you boys noticed much increase in the amout of intake noise from your bikes? I do actual TOURING on my R3T and any additional noise can be tiresome on a long ride and even detract from enjoying the sites if too intrusive. So, what can you tell us R3T owners about additional noise due to this air cleaner system? Thanks for your input.

I actually hear what sounds like a knock, but I know it's the butterflies or something chattering and I only hear it when I hammer on it. Of course if you bury the throttle through all the gears it sound like my old 350 Chevy with the air filter removed. I like it except for the knock sound.
 
Same on my Classic, a knock or slapping noise - comes in around 2000 revs and again around 3000, loudness depending on throttle opening. A drawback on any under bearclaw filter it seems, I'm not sure I can live with to be honest.

Chris (barbagris) on here reckons he has quietened his down by playing with his PC5+A/T but that isn't an option for me.

I have a laser helmet and a cheaper brand....I've done 1500 kms in one day with the laser with no problem...I wouldnt be able to say that about the cheaper brand helmet though...true story no bull****!!! Thats exhaust related though havnt noticed much dif with the air filter even with the crap brand lid.

I try not to be a technical ignoramus, but I don't always succeed, so I have a question about these Ram-Air installations.

Here in Florida, the period on the calendar between June 1 and December 1 is known as "the Rainy Season". This is for a very good reason - it RAINS - and rains heavily, for days on end. As it turns out, though, the rain isn't all day long. Sometimes it only rains for 30 - 60 minutes out of the day, the point being that one minute you can be on a nice ride while the next minute you're in a monsoon. You can't imagine what a hard Florida summer rain is like unless you've been in one - at times it feels as if you're under water. Can't run - can't hide - can't make it stop. That's what rainsuits are for.

However, with these Ram-Air filters sticking our from under the bearclaw as they do, how do you stop rainwater from taking the short path directly into the engine. I can't believe that a substantial amount of water entering the engine in this fashion can be a good thing - or would I be worried about nothing? At least my underseat airbox (which carries a K&N) is shielded against the elements.
 
Admittedly my filter is not foam like the Ramair but I've ridden several times in heavy rain with no noticeable effect. I'd prefer to have a pre-filter cover on but none is available for this particular K&N. I guess my main concern is not so much the water (it atomises anyway) but what it might wash through the the filter. So far there's no indication of residue either inside the filter of intake tubes whatsoever, although I haven't had to deal with monsoon all rain. There's always moister in the air anyway, especially in your humidity, not to mention from road spray, and that would be going under seat as well. Keep it well oiled and I don't see a problem.
