Which way do you turn rear shocks

When I boought my 08 R3C in 2012 the original rear shocks had been swapped out for the Triumph comfort shocks. When adjusting them which way is to go to a higher/lower number, is that number softer/firmer, and how do you know that your adjustment is locked in the desired position? I need to try one position softer from it's current setting due to low back issues. It appears that they are currently at about the half way point. Thanks.

1 is soft, 5 is absolutely butt hurting hard.

Turn them counterclockwise so that the number 1 lines up with the lower shock mount bolt (if you want the soft setting. Which really isn't soft IMHO...). Helps if you jack up the bike to turn the adjuster....
