What to look for?

@ksquared - Thanks for the welcome - I try and keep away from the tourist traps - too many looky loo's in their rentals driving around not watching the road. I'm actually out in Henderson so I can escape to the desert in 15 minutes :)
He lives in Henderson as well - works at the Golden Nugget.

89 Octane recommended. It is said it will run on anything.
Change the oil at 5,000 miles. Use the Castrol Full Syn 10W/50 4T.
Be sure to grease the drive shaft splines every time the tire comes off. Use Moly 60.
Keep the pleated paper air filter and clean it with each oil change.
Get a Dobeck Performance AFR Plus.
Wear a full face helmet.

Thanks for the info -
Why the AFR controller? What improvement did you get?
Full face in the winter - but open in the 115 deg summers.

Welcome to the great world of the RIII.

First, there are no tappets, there are shims under the cams that may need adjustment. Second, get yourself TuneECU. It will allow you to retune your bike (best done with a dyno and somebody who knows what they are doing - although there are a lot of good tunings available which will be pretty close for excellent peerformance), and also trouble shoot and repair and adjust a whole bunch of other stuff. It is the most essential tool for the RIII, IMHO.

It is unlikely that you are hearing a loose 'tappet' as typically the valve clearances tighten up not loosen. probably you are hearing an injector ticking away. There are many options for performance gains on the Rocket. TuneBoy, TuneEcu (free, just need to buy a cable) are the most common.
