What did I break now??? I have a 2005 standard with approx 70000 miles, for the last 10000 mi or so I would get a "false neutral " when shifting to 5 th gear, I mean 4 to 5 under load would result in a noisy missed gear, let the revs settle down and it would click into 5 eaisier. This happened intermittently not all the time, until this morning.it did its usual miss but this time it will not engage 5th and 4 is very "noisy, bag of marbles noisy. I had to abort my commute and limp home using 1 2 and3 which seem to be ok, third seemed a little off but I don't recall anything, common issue so to speak, about 4 or 5 gear. Is this something the update kit addresses I have those parts bought the kit a couple years ago. Any info is greatly appreciated

If it has not had the update kit you might have a couple problems. The first thing I would do if you are mechanically inclined is drop the oil out. then drop the sump pan and inspect the rear left for bearing pieces cage parts and such. There has been a few changes to the transmission in the update kit. Mainly second gear and Dog ring but a few other little things like the instead of a spline bushing and thrust washer they are combine as one I will have to look at the kit instructions to pick out the other changes. They also changed the detent arm wheel from a steel roller wheel to a roller bearing wheel. Anything inside the transmission the engine has to come out and split. Like I said you can pop the pan off and see how the out put bearing is doing they definitely leave debris in the pan. This can be done while it is on the kick stand.

I also would not rule out the selector arm bolt working its way loose making the selector arm floppy in the selector drum.

Here is the update kit instructions so you get a idea.

Yikes!!!, thanks for the swift reply, your knowledge of this bike is amazing. Looking at the information you sent me,thanks buy the way, finding my copies would add many days to this project. It doesn't seem to reference 5 th gear, also will I need any specialized tools to split the cases and get it back together.is there anything else that should be done while apart, seems like an intimidating job.and after my local shop quoted almost 400 bucks for fork seals I really don't want to ask them for a quote.

You really can not tell what all is damaged until you split the case. The only real specialty tools are the spline sockets to pull the rear engine mounts most make them out of a socket. And the cam timing tool if your doing the update on it. Your miles are high enough a new chain and guides would do her good anyway. It might be better to look for a low mileage newer engine and stuff her in there. They all will fit.

Thanks for the swift reply, your knowledge of this bike is amazing.thanks also for the instructions finding mine would add many days to this project.at the bottom of the page it says 2 of 32, I don't remember getting that many pages of anything in my kit. Also it references technical news 93,10 are those available anywher

Sorry for the redundant accolades but they are warranted and I didn't think my first reply posted

Sounds like this could be the detent spring as well...giving a false neutral are the symptoms I got with my 08 R3T...I know the early models had tranny problems too, but wouldn't it be less work to check the detent spring first?

I have never seen the technical news paper work so I will see if I can find one. It might take a little while for my triumph guy to locate it. but these bushings and splined washer were basically machined as a whole unit verses the early two piece style. plus a little change in shims and thrust /belleville washers. easy stuff to change.

so there is hope, gonna take kmrmikes suggestion and take it slow going in thru the front first.thanks for the imput guys, it really helps
