That is how mine felt, but I didn't hear the noise. Usually when going up hill and WOT in 2nd gear. What is the build date on your bike, supposedly everything built after 11/07 has all of the upgrades.
I've been recently having a little problem with second gear too. It just isn't a solid shift when under heavy acceleration. It shifts fine when driving normally but when I'm "on" it and shift to second, it feels sloppy like it doesn’t go into gear completely. Sometimes I miss it altogether. What a coincidence cuz it just stated hapening, too. Mine’s an 06.
How is the "rattle" determined to be from the cam chain or the oil pump? My 2006 with just 6,900 miles just started making the rattle. It does go away after warming up.
I fixed mine a long time ago way before triumph would addmit somthing was wrong
I think the sound is a bit like a loose lifter.MY key in lower sproket was very worn. You
could clearly see a wear line with the eye.my rattle never went away till i fixed it.

Got word today that I am getting the upgrade kit and head gasket replaced for free. Sucks that I don't have a bike right now, but it doesn't suck that Triumph is going to take care of it when I am more than a year out of warranty.
The mechanic I talked to just got back from Triumph's tech school for the new T-bird. He said the T-bird engine weighs almost as much as the Rocket's engine. He was very impressed with the engineering.
Along with the info on the oil pump drive Gus said that Triumph is going one heat range higher on all the spark plugs across the board, ie not just for the Rocket, but also for the Speed Triple, the Tiger, and everything else. I don't have my shop manual in front of me but I think that would take it from a NGK ...8ES to a 9ES.
He also said on the Rocket only, to check the free play in the clutch cable and put it at 2 mm. Follow the procedure in the shop manual. He said almost all he's seen are too loose and that will affect gear clash between gears on some bikes, notably shifting from first to second.
Sorry to hear of your 2nd gear woes. You described my symptoms exactly before they were finally fixed 5 attempts and 9 months later. You are taking it to the right place to get fixed. Mine is also a 2006 classic.
I'm happy to report that my dealer finally got my transmission fixed properly. Now have 1400 miles since the repair and the tranny snicks into gear like it should have always done. Very happy to have it working properly.
I've done several WOT runs up through 4th and had no issues. Did have to tighten the clutch cable by 1/2 a turn and this made the shifting perfect with no additional effort required. Neutral is also easy to find now.
