Transponder Chip Toyota keys

Has anyone ever had to get a new transponder key for a Toyota tundra. My key for my 08 Tundra has got wore down and will not open the tail gate buy will still start the truck. So I was thinking about getting a new key and programing it myself. Has anyone ever done this if so how did you program the key.

Bought a new key for my daughters Tundra at ACE hardware , they had some special machine to program it I believe , was not cheap about $50 if I remember right
