Transmission Issue!

ok guys I dont know if I got lost in the shuffle here or what But according to Triumph there was never an upgrade purchased or sent to my dealer for any of my trans repairs...could this be the cause of mine breaking twice? and do you think I have any recourse. The 2nd time it went the dealer told Triumph that I was running a car tire and Tiumph then backed off from any help due to unauthorised modifications ie blaming the use of the car tire as the blame for the tranny problem the third time was 6000 miles later and a regular bike tire ....am I just unlucky as all hell or is there such thing as a lemon law for this problem
 
If there was no update kit purchased for the bike what did they put into it to fix it? Surely there has to be record or receipts from the repairs they did.

As for the Car tire voiding warraty its purley up to how the dealer presented it to Triumph and how Triumph wants to perceive it when you are installing something on a bike that is not made for motorcycles. I am not trying to argue whether it did the damage or not. Even though I would not run a car tire on a bike, in my opinion it most likely was not the cause of it. But then my opinion does not count for anythign when it comes to Triumph Corporate decisions.
 

I have all the paperwork and parts listings for all the repairs and on none of them was the upgrade kit part number but I had asked the dealer if they used the upgrade kit and they said they did but it was not listed on the parts list , just all of the related gears etc that were replaced My question is because they never did replace the so called upgrade kit is that why mine keeps breaking? I will find out more once it goes to the dealer but Im afraid once they look at it ie tear it down etc I wont be able to pay for it and will end up losing the bike but if I can get the money up before they finish then so be it last time it was in for this it was 2 months before they could fix it so I might be able to raise the cash needed but this time I want answers and it fixed right!
 
First there never was a upgrade kit it was called a update kit. which had a lot more then just the two gears in the second gear cluster. It replaced some shims and beleville washers. the complete out put drive unit, coil leads, plugs, timing chain guide and chain along with the gears and a new set of clutch springs. from my memory I will have to look to see what I missed when I get home.

So that being said I am wondering what they keep fixing and wonder if it is second gear are they ordering the old style gears instead of the new ones? I will wait and see what you have listed in the parts list because something sounds fishy here. Or like they are doing something wrong for sure.

I beat the crap out of my bike and have a wee bit more horse power then stock and have had no issues since the update kit went in except for when I exploded my internal clutch hubb and bent the tranny input shaft. But I have 10,000 really hard miles on it since then.

i have transcribed my 2 tranny breakdowns as they appear on my invoices and both times I had reminded them of the updates that were to be done and the shop said they did them...verbally that is,but as I can now see they were not done on either repair, the question is do I have any recourse for this and has this helped the breakdown occur again I have babied the bike ever since the 2nd problem and now have 78000 miles on it I have done two cross country trips since the last breakdown but that was alot of just plain hwy miles and not alot of shifting So my question is is this a bad tranny or am I just one unlucky SOB Any help or answers are appreciated and just for the record my mechanical abilities are so so but I am not a rocket scientist lol I hope these come thru as I am not a computer geek either

I will have to take a closer look when I get home but it looks like your problem is not the second gear problem. I am surprised they ddi not order the update kit since they were tearing into it anyway. This si usually when Triumph authorizes i. They still might be able to order it especially if they inform Triumph of the issues they have been having with it. for th eprice the kit will cover most of the gaskets and and stuff. I would get on them because it basically looks like either there is a special problem with you tranny or they do not know what they are doing. One Idea that crosses my mind is what about the shifting forks? If they are bent they might not make the gears mesh completly which woudl cause problems and once fragment flow around in the other gears more problems could arrise.

Can you discribe what happened on the first two tranny failures?

Wow if I could remember exactly The last one was I noticed alittle slippage in 4th gear and then on the way to the shop going into 4th nice and easy it just cluncked in and started the blender sound and the wheel stated to lock up pulling the clutch didnt seem to help so I forced it back to third and slowly headed home I want to say the 2nd time it was also 4th gear or so I thought and the first time I think was 3rd to 4th when it went . all 3 times I really had no prior warning just clunck and grind and tran lock up. Thanks for all your help so far
 
Ok first I see Triumph covered the first tranny problem. What amazes me is they did not insist on the dealer installing the update kit, which was out in 08; also, I cannot believe the dealer did not know about it or ask. This dealer obviously does not pay attention to sites or for that matter does not have any networking with other dealers. Your second job looks much like the first replacing input 3/4 gear both times and third gear output and then third and fourth gear output on the second round. This along with a few other different things. Which could be from the 3/4th failure or missing it the first time? Things like replacing the second gear bushing the second tranny job make me ask what was wrong with the bushing that the second gear rides on and why. Without having the tranny in front, I can only gestimate. Nevertheless, I figure you must have a fork problem also which was never replaced. Shifting forks are critical to gear engagement and if I were replacing gears, I would look very closely to the dogs or dog rings that engage them. If the engagement is not a problem and pieces of metal went between the gear teeth causing some damage I would be interested in how the shafts concentricity is. I would definitely put them between centers to check the concentricity of them and if I had no way of doing it (Which I could do it in the engine case if all else fails) I would replace them anyway.
Overall, I figure they did not correct the problem the first time so they should have covered the second time also and that being said I believe this is why you are going for round three. Make sure they look at the output drive, which would be replaced with the update kit. Since you obviously have had fragments flowing thru the tranny and the old style output bearings were not sealed and lubricated by the engine oil I would be worried if them bearing s have not been compromised by now. If I were them, I would order the update kit because price wise you would get a lot of the stuff that need to be replaced. In addition, the rest and they should be worried about the shifting forks. I also believe you should point out the similarities of the problems after they tear it down and try to tell you that many of the same things need to be replaced. You want to find out first what is wrong before giving them the idea that they did not fix it twice already which means they should be much more helpful this time around. I myself believe they should feel responsible since you are definitely a repeat customer for the same issue they obviously failed on.
 
Thank you very much I do feel a little better Now to just deal with the shop I dont get good vibes from them on a daily basis but hopefully them and Triumph will agrree that it a common occurence that should not be happening and at least Ill get the update kit t least for the tranny as I think most other stuff was replaced by me alreadyI will keep you informed or let you know when my trials starts for chocking the **** out of them But all is good for now off to them on Tues when they open back up
