Timing Chain Gear

Hey Guys,

My friend Bill had a Time Chain Gear break into three pieces, luckly at low speed, on his 07. Anyone else had this problem. I've got just about 8K on my girl and so far it's still a honeymoon, no problems whatsoever, except of course needing a new rear tire. Got it off Ebay for $175, and a great little shop in San Jose "Old School Motorcycles" put it on for me. Triumph refused to install it becuase I didn't buy it overly marked up version from them. Shouldn't this have been a warranty repair?

Time chain gear, officially known as the cam chain sprocket had been prone to failure but mostly on the older pre-2006 machines. In 2006, this part was redesigned and I haven't heard much about failures on the newer machines.

Your friend Bill probably got an unlucky failure but all repairs should be under warranty if it is a 2007 machine. Just have your bud hang in there. It'll get sorted out.

yes, it's warranty, I was curious if this was a common problem. took my baby on a club ride thiis weekend, mostly HD's. the rocket really stood out, I love this bike, and it's been problem free at 8K.

I just had the 10K service done on my 07 and mentioned the timing gear to the service writer when I checked in. He said they hadn't noted any problems with them and mine is in good shape. Runs great.

Now if we can just get some warm weather....

I guess Bills cam gear problem was just a fluke. As for S. Ca. weather, as a N. CA. guy I can tell you it's not as nice as you would think. When your used to 80's and the nights plunge to 30's and the days are in the low 60's it's very cold. When I ride at night, I wear polar gloves and three layers on top. For some reason my legs don't get cold, wonder what that is.

Hey, have you guys seen the 08 bagger Rocket. Interesting look, though IMHO it's starting to look like every other tourer out there, still there's that power thing. Can't beat that, litterly. Merry Christmass guys.

Danny, I grew up on Sacto so have experienced the winters. In fact, last year I hauled my GS to San Diego and then stopped in Sac on the way back. I rode to the Easy Riders bike show in down town Sacramento from Carmichael. It was about 30 degrees when we set out for down town.

Is $2000 the normal cost or was this due to other damage the sprocket caused?

Earthmapper, you paid for half repairs for $2000? A total repair of $4000 is pretty steep but still within reason since labor costs vary a lot from area to area. When the cam sprocket goes, you almost always have to do valve/head work. If the break was bad you also need a new crankshaft.

When mine went, I only got one bent valve but I asked for a quote from my dealer on the cost to replace all 12 valves and they said $1100. Dirt cheap when you consider the cost of all new valves and gaskets and whatnot to go with cost $900 for parts alone. A new crankshaft ups the labor and parts list a bunch. $1200 just for a new crank. Considering that, I bet you had to replace more than a few valves and the crankshaft, eh Earthmapper?

If mine lets go and demands that much work, that's when I install Nev's cams and pistons.
