stripped drive drain bolt

tried pushing the magnet in but it is very tight ,am afraid if I put too much force magnet might fall in.There is also oil leaking ,most likely from around the thread.Is the length of bolt 10mm

Don't push, tap it lightly using a smaller diameter bolt or an awl etc. and a light hammer.

My bolt is 16mm long under-head, there is about 5 to 6mm protruding inside the casing as far as I can tell.

The end of the magnet is level with the end of the bolt so if you measure the length of the broken bit and take that away from 16mm you will know the length of the bit still in the casing. This will give you a guide to how far you can safely tap the magnet in. As others have said you just need enough depth to jam a screwdriver in the hole, the remainder of the bolt shouldn't be tight so it wont need much of a jam, just be careful.

Cant argue with that, but if you buy a used bike how do you know what tightness has been used before? That plug only needs to be slightly overtightened to put a small amount of stretch on it and then one day, maybe in a different pair of hands, - ping its gone.

If I had known they were so weak I would have bought a new one before changing the oil in my unit. The old one would have ended up in dustbin - broken or not.

had a bit of scare ...tapped in the magnet 3/4 mm inside and then tried to unscrew it with a screw drive.The outer tread are stripped a bit so tried to wiggle the bolt by screwing it in and the magnet along with tread fell inside the bevel case.seems my drain bolt is short may 10mm long.The previous owner might have changed the drain bolt

I was able to use a tiny magnetic pick up ,get the bolt piece back into the hole and use magnetic force to spin & screw the bolt back in.Now the screw has last couple of tread left to protrude out of the hole but is very tight to spin the bolt..have sprayed generous amount of WD40 will try with 6.5 mm srew driver

It may not be the case that your plug is shorter, the problem is that the thickness of the casing around the plug is only about 10mm as far as I can tell. This means the plug is protruding inside the case by 6mm. The thread pitch is 1.5mm, with a snapped-off plug it only takes a few turns to run out of thread.

Hope the 6.5mm screwdriver works for you, lucks been on your side so far lets hope it continues.

where can i purchase the M10 drive quick drain,has anyone installed quick drain for engine oil drain port too.I am concerned about the ground clearance.

Well done mate, I bet that was a relief.

Running a tap through would be a good idea but be careful not to start a new thread when you do it.

Don't have any experience of 'quick drains', but have seen mention on here somewhere.

Thread sealant

I use LOCTITE brand thread sealant when I reinstall both of the drive housing plugs. That way you don't have to tighten them so much as to strip the threads. No leaks that way!
