over tightened the drive drain bolt a bit too much and snapped the bolt head .Can anyone suggest way of getting the snapped portion of bolt out.The thread on drive cover seems to stripped too.
I had planned a 600 mile trip tomorrow,do you think the stuck portion of bolt will hold drive oil for the duration of trip or sealing with gasket maker or silicone temporarily.

Knock the magnet in the center portion of the bolt inward just a little bit and then remove the bolt with an easy out. I rode for 30k miles after snapping the bolt head off until I finally decided to fix it. Stripping the head off of that bolt is common, it is very delicate and only takes about 12nm to torque it properly.

You need to be really careful if trying to knock that magnet in, if it goes too far and drops inside you are in real trouble as the drive unit is not easy to take apart.

Its unlikely the thread in the alloy is stripped as the plug is so weak it would snap off before the thread strips, that is unless someone has cross threaded it or something previously.

Your best bet is to try and 'work' the broken part out by moving it back and forth a little at a time. Others have done this in the past.

is the magnet cylindrical or 'T shaped with head.Does the magnet fit into the bolt hole,by snug tolerance fit or glue/ brazed.

Does anyone know the size/thread of the bolt itself.I could see the outer couple of tread stripped

Plain 6mm rod magnet with snug fit I guess. Thread is M10 x 1.5

I think there is a counter bore on the front of the hole that might look like missing threads, difficult to say without seeing. I have a spare drive unit in the garage I will have a look. Can you post a picture?

Edit: Just checked and it isn't a c/bore but a large chamfer.

I cannot find the actual size of drain plugs from the R3 service manual as Iintend to replace them with sumitomo quick drain valves
does anybody has that info??
thanks in advance

As said knock the magnet in just a wee bit then use an easy out or a flat head screw driver that is a tight fit to unscrew the bolt, if we would only follow directions this **** would never happen:eek::D the stock item is perfect for the job just use the correct torque when tightening:D

yea, like you follow directions Dave.
I specifically remember my owners manual saying,
Wash once per year whether it needs it or not.
you keep yours so clean a bug don't splatter,
he just hits it an slides off.;)

I do have some experience with that rear drain bolt as I sheard mine off a while back, have had the new one off and on since then and use a torque wrench to tighten and all has been well:D
Skip your MOM (motorcycle owners manual) must be wrong as mines says wash and polish once per day.
