Was your sidestand down once you got home? It would explain why it would only crank in neutral.

As for the rest of the problem it sounds like a faulty started selenoid, which I think is not serviceable and part of the $700 starter assembly. I'd wait and see if it does it again....

double check battery connections first thing, then if it only happens when hot, check your ground...

My vote is for the battery connections and if they are clean and tight, then the battery is done. They never last three years and with a bike that is difficult to push start, I am OK with new batteries at 2 years.

Had the same problem at Daytona this year replaced battery all was well. I can see where you should check the cable regardless. The Triumph battery is not the longest or the best battery as soon as it started failing I changed her so I would not end up stranded.

I'd be more apt to say weak battery or link to battery. Is that PC625 (Odyssey, right) rated with as much cranking amps as the stock? Are you also using a charger that is optimal for that type of battery? If not, then it's longevity and reliability won't but any better than a regular battery.

Far as why it helps when you're in gear and you push is that even though the clutch is pulled, there is still drag between the transmission and crank since the plates are not completely separated, so when you help push it, you're easing the strain on the starter motor.

If jumping with a different battery don't make a big difference then I'd say a new starter motor is on order.

I don't believe the Battery Tender Plus is rated for them fancy batteries. I don't have one so can't recommend but there was a thread around here a while back about chargers for those batteries. You can also ask the shop where you got the battery or people like at Batteries Plus.

Did you also check connections to the starter?

Still running my original oem battery. It was 4 years old in July and still spins the engine like day one!

I'd try jumping the bike using a car battery a few times to make sure it isn't the bike battery not giving out enough amps. If behavior is still same by jumping then it's probably that starter motor. Get the $700 ready to fly.

You are running a turbo unit, Brembo. I wonder if your setup is getting real hot under there next to the starter and frying it. I've had starter problems because excess heat down there before.

One last thing to try is maybe your clutch is set too tight and producing too much resistance during startup. Try loosening the clutch (tighter cable) and see if that helps.
