Ride
2005 Triumph Rocket 3
Afternoon all. i've had my 2005 Rocket III for a little over a year, and love it. I usually rider her 3-4 times a week and she hasn't missed a beat, until this last couple of times. It starts up fine first time, rides smoothly through the gears and ticks over at idle @ 900rpm, after about 20 mins of riding, i turn the bike off, and when i go restart she wont start - i have to give it a little throttle and then it'll start, but wont idle.... i can ride her (again, smoothly through all gears etc) but if i release the throttle she will just cut out and die. If i park up for over an hour or so, i'll go to start her up again and it's all good again. very odd..... any suggestions of where to look first?

P>S. - I'm assuming this is a separate issue, but i've posted elsewhere that recently i'm struggling to find neutral when the bike is running, but this will have started at about the same time, so thought it might be worth mentioning.

maybe won't help but i would start with cleaning the neutral switch
becareful not to loose the spring and cap that is in the end of shaft the spring and cap may be stuck in the end of shaft
also check if clutch switch is malfunctioning. try to start with out pulling in clutch.

Hi Turbo, thanks..... I'll clean the neutral switch this weekend. I've tried starting without pulling clutch lever in, and it doesn't even crank.

And use electronic contact cleaner, never wd40 or anything like that. I'm assuming that's what crc is?

Check primary tps and settings in tune ecu. Also check stepper motor and linkage.

Okay, an update then. Not had a chance to do much yet, tbh. I've now payed for TuneECU for Android, and I've bought a cable from Lonelec so i'm good to go on that front, I just need to do more reading on how to use it properly.

In the meantime, I thought i'd try the 12 min tune in case that would do anything. started fine, idled fine as usual.... until the fan kicked in. I set timer for 14 mins to be on safe side, but within 10-20 seconds of fan coming on, the revs dropped right down, and the exhaust fumes were more smoky.... revs went back up for 10 secs or so, then dropped right down again, and after a probably a couple of minutes, the engine cut out.

Any thoughts?

when i work on vehicles i offten disconect the battery then when you reconnect the battery it resets the ecu back to new values and sometimes the vehicle will barely run set at new values and it takes a couple of miles for the ecu to compensate and run good.
i have never done a 12 min tune. but on yours i would advise against it.
