Speaking of heat

Has any of the other "southern captains" experienced significant probelms with heat off the exhaust being too uncomfortable? I bought my R3std last October and was wondering if the radiant heat was going to be too much when the fierce Texas sun soon starts creating real problems. I can't imagine having to deal with both the R3 heat and the sun.

However, I did notice an increase in discomfort after adding Triumph's lower wind deflectors. They work extremely well in reducing the "head buffet" but not sure if they are worth it since I have noticed a lot more heat from the exhaust on the old arse.

Having owned the Roadster screen and lowers, and also riding with the fly screen most of the time, I would say you definitely should remove the lowers during the Spring, Summer, and Fall here. The Roadster screen also seems to trap some heat in the rider area at a stand still, as the heat from the radiator rises and is guided straight to the rider by the wind shield. Moving takes care of all of that though. Riding with the fly screen, I really don't notice any heat difference compared to any other bike...


I have since sold the Roadster screen and lowers because I didn't really use them that much in the two years that I had them.

I've been thinking about wraping the pipes with exaust tape (or what ever you call it). Wonder if that would help? I believe the chrome covers would still fit with the tape on. Any thoughts? My right thigh gets baked during the summer.

I had the lowers on for one ride. They blocked the cooling air flow and made it worse. I have a Fleetliner and that really made for a poor combination with the lowers. With just the Fleetliner it was just fine.

I seem to remember that there was something called Baker Airwings? They bolted up to the crashbars and you could set them up to direct cool air from the ends of the radiator to the insides of your legs. You still get some hot air from the radiator but the cool air dilutes it. If you get on your bike you can see that the flow of hot air goes from the radiator back inbetween the engine and your legs. Someone made a joke about some asbestos jeans but if you were to sew some sort of heat shield material to the inside of your calf area it would help. If wouldn't look any goofier than the silly arse Harley riders that dress up like Halloween pirates. In fact.. if I saw someone with jeans like that I would think that "Hey, there's a Rocket Captain who logs some miles and knows wtf he is doing".

Flip needs to come up with a kit for this

I used to run a set of stainless radiator air deflectors that looked awesome but they didn't do a **** thing. I took them off. They do look good, better than the screen that Triumph puts on the back of the radiator. I'll send them to Flip to copy if he wants to... just some cool bling

I had mine Jet Hot coated. Costs more than wrapping, but gives a great result. And no concerns with the covers.

I find that the radiator heat is more uncomfortable than the exhaust especially at stop lights. In fact I don't even notice the exhaust at all. When that fan starts up it's like someone opened the oven door.

That's for **** sure ! That radiator blasts the heat right at my right shin. Feels like the oven door opened. Ah well, that's the price we have to pay for riding these beasts. I'll deal with it.

My headers on the Bonnie are Jet Hot Sterling. I don't know about the heat given off, but they cool down quick.

You guys have to remember, a 2.3 liter infernal combustion engine is going to give off heat. It ain't no moped.

I run my lowers and I don't bake. The trick is to keep moving which meand avoiding traffic jams and doing 2 lane roads. Fas as the butt goes, I use Monkeybutt and have no problems with half baked ass.

I think a lot of the heat depends on what kind of windshield or Fairing you are using in conjunction with the lowers. Like I said... the Fleetliner plus lowers turned out to be a very poor (or hot) combination.
