I've been grounded from the bike riding for a while. Last Wednesday I had surgery on my right shoulder for a torn bicep tendon. Then while they were digging around, the doctor found my rotator cuff was torn, too. Can't wait to get my arm out of the sling.
I feel your pain, brother! I've been diagnosed with a complex tear of my left meniscus. Can't bear any weight on my left leg, so I can't ride. Surgery is scheduled for week of May 5. At least the rehab is relatively short - about 4-6 weeks, after which I will be able to ride without limitation. Since we have a 12 month riding season here - it's just a setback, but I haven't ridden in about a month and I'm really itchy!

I've been told 5 years my knees are shot...since I am now 47, I am biding my time for replacements. The trick is to keep the muscles strong for the support. ...and an occasional cortisone shot every 3-6 months doesn't hurt. Since I don't have any cartilage left, I can keep doing this until the shots don't help anymore.

I stretched out my surgery as long as I was able to do. I believe I was in my 40's when I was told I needed both knees replaced. My right one finally collapsed on me when I was 56. I had no choice but to get it done. But it was the best thing pain wise that I could have done. I have more range of motion then ever before, 120 Deg. Im actually looking forward to having the left knee replaced next Jan. No cartilage either. The cortisone shots are useless to me now. Dont wait too long.

As I be facing a left knee replacement and a right hip replacement, how long were you off the motor with the knee job?

I had close to a 4 month recovery time. Average recovery time is about 3-4 months. As far as getting back on the bike that would be entirely up to you. Some people heal faster then others. It takes a good 8-10 months to fully recover. I was driving my tractor trailer in 4 months but by the end of my shift I had to ice the knee down each night. The bike was a different situation for me as I took it apart for a front to back rebuild months before my surgery because I was not able to ride it with the damaged knee. So it was down about 1 year after the surgery before I finally finished it and got back on it. Bottom line is the better you do your rehab the faster you would be back on it.

People do heal at different paces. I haven't had the knee job yet but I am sure it is coming with all the torture I have put mine through. After the doc put my arm back together and my ribs healed from the get off in Aug ’09, it was two months before I could squeeze the clutch and another month before my first ride on a my wife’s little Ninja. I couldn’t hold myself up with the left arm though as the darn Triceps ware still too puny.

After hitting the deer in Aug ’11, it was a whole month before I could ride again after my sternum fracture. And that was still tough as any pressure caused by moving the arms to and fro cause a slight discomfort. (Ok, maybe ‘slight’ is an understatement. It hurt like hell but I couldn’t stay off and needed the wind therapy to distress).

K^2, I hope your time off is spent well and that your recovery is a quick one. BTW, don’t pinch your PT’s butt, evidently that is a no-no these days…

The goal is to stay active... Still have range of motion, one knee gets a little fluid if I irritate it too much. I used to take 'Osteo By-Flex', but switched over to 'Ligavar 5X'. Makes a world of difference. I can tell the difference when I haven't taken any for a couple of weeks. I've given up softball, only run short distances when I need to, but won't give up bowling. Despite the injury with my right arm, I established a new average last Wednesday with my left hand in League. 102 for a left hand average compared to 174 with my right... I didn't think that was too bad.

I don't think the pinching will be a problem... I have a male therapist this time. (this will be interesting).
