I had the bike parked up for 4 weeks, with the battery on a charger. Came home, put the battery in, fired her up and rode out the gate. Into neutral, stand down, got off to shut the gate when she shut down. Now when the key is turned there's no response at all, no lights, no needle sweep, nothing. Checked the fuses, pulled out the ignition relay, sprayed WD40 around the connections, all seems okay. The battery is giving 12.8V, so don't think it's the cause. The clock is the only thing still running, must be on a different circuit to everything else. It happened a few seconds after the stand was put down, after I'd already gotten off, so maybe the stand switch is to blame? But as I understand it, that would just prevent the bike from starting, the instruments should still work? One other thing I noticed, when connecting the battery, the instrument lights briefly come on as the negative terminal is connected. It seems juice is momentarily getting through, but not for long. Anybody seen this before, or have an idea what it could be?

The only thing I can suggest is check every one of your fuses! Also check the battery terminals and make sure they aren't the least bit corroded and are tight!

It sounds somewhat familiar. It could be the dreaded ignition switch problem that soooo many of us have had to deal with. Try to slowly move the key left and right in the ON position to see if you get the instrument sweep. Also check to see if the headlight comes on momentarily. If any of these come on for a quick bit, then you're looking at the ignition switch change out. A real PITA.

The question I would ask is... do you hear the fuel pump cycle when you turn the key on? I had a problem where my ECU locked up. Had to take it to the dealership to have them get her going again.

Thanks for the suggestions. Turning the key gives no response at all, no fuel pump cycle, no warning lights, no needle sweep, no headlights. Moving the key side to side once turned on also gives no response. The only sign of life is when connecting the battery, when the engine warning and oil pressure / temperature lights flash once. I pulled and checked all the fuses, all are intact. Using a multimeter between the positive terminal and the bike frame with the battery connected gives 12.8V. Looks like I'll have to load it on the truck and take it the 400km to Bangkok.

My moneys on the battery being buggered. Those optimate things aint worth a crap. Never had one and its very rare i've had a battery problem, matter of fact only one in ten years.

Before you ship it off, get a good car battery and connect it to the bike and see if she runs. Make sure the car battery is not connected to the car when you connect it to the bike.

I hooked it up to a car battery. Again, the warning lights flashed as the connection was made, but no go when the key is turned. The dealer in Bangkok is sending me a checklist to work through, and is talking about sending a mechanic up to have a look at it if that fails. Hopefully I'll get it sorted before too long, I've been away for 4 weeks and am itching to have a ride.
