Running rough in lower revs

Hi all,

I’ve picked up a new R3 GT for a project build and am in the process of running it in and getting a feel for the bike before work begins. It’s currently got just under 200 kms on it.

The engine runs somewhat rough in the lower revs, with slight misfiring and unpredictability l. This cleans up from around 3000 revs, although even when warm if I hold it at 3000 in neutral it’s misfiring here and there. Nothing extreme, but noticeable and not what I’d typically expect from a relatively under-stressed engine. Can I ask other members whether this is normal for this engine? My suspicion is that it’s an arrogant of emissions regulations tuning, but I’d appreciate feedback as to whether it might be a niggle with the bike.

Thanks

My 2020 R3GT is the same. Also has some engine ticking at idle especially when it's warmed up. Just had it in for the shift assist addition and asked them to do a "check up" for me. They test rode it and said everything is operating normal and I shouldn't worry about it. Just the nature of the beast I guess. Was hoping I could test ride one for comparison but they didn't have one available.

I have the 2021 R and mine is smooth as from idle to 5000 when it falls on its face but thats the way it is from the factory. If yours is missing under load and in neutral from idle to 3000, I would definitely ask questions. I know this wont be the answer, but check your battery terminals as that is a huge issue from the factory. Make sure they're clean and tight. If you have a small camera, try to make a video of you riding it and when its in neutral

It does seem to be becoming smoother, which could either just be a couple of warmer days or more running in. Will keep an ear on it.

Now to get more kms on it before starting the real fun, including a TTS supercharger if I can get road compliance on it here in the land of tight rules for everything.

Hi everyone,

I have a 2020 Triumph Rocket 3 GT, and I'm experiencing something that sounds more like popping, spitting, or afterfire rather than a typical misfire.
It starts becoming noticeable around 2,200 RPM and seems to get more frequent and audible as the revs increase toward 3,500 RPM.

The important thing is that it happens while the throttle is open, not just during deceleration. I can hear these small popping/spitting sounds, but I don't feel any obvious hesitation, jerking, or loss of power. The engine seems to pull normally.

Previously, I had a loose ignition coil connector that caused noticeable hesitation and power loss when going past 4,000 RPM. That problem was fixed, and this feels completely different.

What I've checked and tried so far:
  • Replaced the spark plugs.
  • Disconnected the O2 sensors and test-rode the bike. No noticeable improvement.
  • Checked and corrected the previously loose ignition coil connector.
  • Checked MAP sensor readings and throttle position values through the ECU diagnostic data. Both appeared normal.
  • Checked short-term fuel trims (STFT), which were generally between -1% and -4%.
I'm trying to understand whether this could be related to the secondary air injection (SAI) system, MAP sensor vacuum hoses, a small intake or exhaust leak, ignition coils, or something else.

Has anyone experienced similar popping or spitting under throttle between 2,000 and 3,500 RPM, without any noticeable loss of power?
Could this be an exhaust afterfire issue even though it happens under throttle, or could it be a subtle ignition-related problem without noticeable hesitation?
I'm particularly interested in hearing from other Rocket 3 owners who have experienced and resolved something similar.

Thanks in advance!

can you post a video of it?

Sounds like a perfectly normal Rocket to me ! - get some better earplugs, and the noise will go away ! 🤣🤣🤣

Haha, fair enough! 😂 I know it probably sounds a bit ridiculous, but I'm pretty mechanically minded, so I tend to notice and obsess over little details like this.

I actually never noticed these sounds before. We recently fixed some loose ignition coil terminals that were causing hesitation, and that's when I started paying attention to this particular noise.

I'm just curious whether yours makes those same occasional low-pitched "boom" sounds while holding a steady 2,200–3,500 RPM.

I don't think I'll be completely at ease until I hear the same sound from another Rocket, but unfortunately I haven't been able to find one nearby to compare.

If I never get a clear answer, I guess earplugs really are my last option! 😂
