I have a set of rear EBC pads ready to put on the at 9500 miles. The best way to look at pad thickness is to pull the wheel off. There was plenty of pad left so I put the wheel back and and greased the spindle bearings instead. Also changed the oil with Ultra 1 15W-50 and HiFlo HF204RC filter. the nut on the top of the oil filter makes changing very easy. I added a bit over 5 qts. checking the dipstick.

I had to do mine around 8 or 9000 miles. I used a feeler that was the lower limit thickness to see how close it was to being woreout. I use the rear brake a lot.

If you're doing it right the rear pads should last a long time since mostly front braking is optimal. I believe it was Keith Code stated in "Twist of the Wrist" that 85% of all braking force is at the front (hence twin disks).

Just a thought. In order to get the “HiFlo” does that mean less filtering of smaller contaminants?
