I heard thats the third week in January most every year!;)

We had an extremely dry summer with all of our lawns burning out. We went into a very wet fall but now cold and clear for about 10 days.

I grew up in California but departed upon graduation from high school. We moved here from Hawaii end of 02 so this winter climate is not my cuppa and by January I'm generally heading to Arizona.

With that said, summers are stunning. For anyone who visits, we'll get you up to Hurricane Ridge in the Olympic National Forrest north of where I live. The road to the ranger station is just out of Port Angeles on the Straits of San Juan. It's a long, winding and fairly steep road to the top. The ride down is a wild one with no guardrails and plenty of places to go over. Some fun.

And of course we have some nice waterways and marinas.

And Port Orchard about 5-6 miles from my house. That's the Olympics in the background.

We do tell visitors, especially Californians, not to move here because it rains all the time.

You left out the old Lewiston grade (old Spiral Hiway) dropping down into Lewiston.

I would add that into the planning, if you are only going to only get one chance in your life to ride down the hill you shouldn't miss it.

Do you have a destination to arrive to early and get a day of rest after a three day ride from Houston? Do you have a recommended route for the Houston 1K9? I'm pulling.

Thanks Steve and that will be quite the ride. Reservations in Forks are highly recommended. The last time I did the loop, Forks was about full up due to the Sekiu/Neah Bay overflow. And you mentioned Port Townsend. I'm thinking you meant Port Angeles. Port Townsend is a lovely little town and a center for the wooden boat industry but off the path.
