Got everything tore down this evening and found both output drive bearings completely wiped out. The innermost bearing substained the worst comming completely appart due to being installed backwards. Yep...you read it right...backwards with the oil control shield blocking off the oil hole in the case, which in turn starved the outtermost bearing. The outer bearing was still intact, but the inner bearing cage which keeps the ball bearings seperated was pretty much gone allowing all the bearings to stack against each other. The end of the shaft also got chewed up a little. PISSED does not even beagin to describe how i feel. Luckily, case damage was minimal. Those bearings must be top secret because there were no identification numbers on them. It will most likely require a total unit replacement. Pictures will be available in my photos unless someone can help me post them on this forum.

In my '06 the bearing was in backward also. I looked at it when I picked up my bike from Baxter's and it did have markings on it. I should have put it in my pocket. It was also in perfect shape. The spring in my TDU was bad and the whole shaft was replaced.

Looking back at my photos of when i had the motor apart a couple of years ago and looking at the picture of my final drive unit, it clearly shows the small end bearing installed from the factory backwards. The photo shows the oil shield facing to the outside which we now know is incorrect. When installed like that, oil cannot get to the bearing and also cannot get to the hollow driveshaft to supply oil to the other bearing. Thing was, at the time it wasn't much of an issue yet discovered. Good news is i've got people in motion and may get the unit warrantied. Let's keep our fingers crossed!

Bearing installed incorrectly

Just picked my bike up last weekend after having the output shaft replaced. One of the bearings failed at 13K and Triumph replaced the unit on their dime with the bike out of warranty for 3 months. The bearings were installed correctly, however, unlike yours. Looks like yours will be paid for as well.
