Has anyone installed a Oil Temperature gauge in their bike. I live in the South West and travel through areas that can reach over a hundred. In conditions like that I like to monitor my oil.
In the past I have used the type that replaces the dip stick. Not sure which one to get for this bike . Any input will be a appreciated

Russ, I know there are some available. In fact I believe Triumph sells one that replaces the standard dipstick/fill spout plug. I have not done it because to me they are unnecessary. I have one on my Harley and rarely glance at it because I know when the oil it is getting too hot. Then engine starts to let me know and I think the Triumph would do the same. The radiator would probably overflow before the oil so hot that it would damage the engine.

To me what would be more useful is a coolant temp gauge. I believe we have idiot lights for both now. I bought a VStrom DL1000 in OKC last July and rode it to San Antonio via 281 in 106 degree heat. I didn't worry about my oil temp but sure watched that coolant temp gauge and there were times when I'd get stuck in traffic that it got to almost the top bar.

An old Harley friend of mine who owns a V-Twin performance shop in Green Bay once told me that oil temperature and pressure gauges on motorcycles are just there to give you something to watch and worry about.

Good point , Mike. Thought about it myself . I will look deeper to see if there is a coolant temp gauge .
The reason I am touchy aboutthe temp is that I had a friend who changed his oil in Las Vegas , then ran tro Seal Beach , Calif. Not far but the temp cooked the 20/50 Castrol , and we had to do some tear down . That was on a BMW , which has a good grade of steel.

A Scangauge will give you water temperature. No oil temps though. I have one semi permanently mounted.
