Oil level

This may seem like a stupid question but if you put too much oil over the max mark on the dipstick (about 1/4 inch over) will that be a problem?

I figured that since it is a dry sump engine that as long as the oil didn't get below the minimum mark in the oil tank you were okay. I checked the owner's manual and it doesn't address the "too much" oil question. Since I slightly "overfilled" the oil tank I need to know if I need to remove some of it.

It's OK

I run mine slightly over the full line as well. Only because its an even number of quarts of oil as I recall. I don't like having partial, open, oil containers sitting around the shop.....SB..
 
I've been doing the same since buying the bike. Mine actually runs just below the filler hole neck. The more oil the better....right? Bigern
 
That was my line of thinking, but I just wanted to make sure.

Flip, funny you should mention that, I actually bought one of those a few years ago just for the occasion that I might overfill my Gold Wing. My wife has her own.

Okay, so just HOW MUCH oil should go back in with a oil/filter change. I couldn't seem to see that information in the owner's manual or the shop manual!
 
In absence of any direction from the owners manual, it appears that what you don't want to do is have too little oil. Since the oil tank is the "sump" tank reservoir (since it is a dry sump engine) for the oil to collect to...I would think along the same line of thought of bigern 2000 that it could be as full as to just under the oil cap opening since all the oil is doing from this tank is gravity feeding to the engine. Don't the Harley engines feed the engine the same way...with an oil tank, I believe they are dry sumps also?

Unless there is a vent from this tank back to the engine I do not see what harm there would be to this practice. I called my shop (didn't talk to Dink the owner and chief mechanic) and the guy I talked to, when I explained my "problem", just said to fill it up to the maximum mark on the dipstick but he didn't really answer my question. I think I'll ask Dink personally when I next visit the shop, and see what he has to say.

Dennis....Nothwithstanding the Tee shirt, you have the principle all wrong. There is a check valve located under the sump plate that keeps the oil from 'gravity' feeding into the engine. The old Triumph's had a habit of doing that. It's called 'wet sumping'. The were dry sump just like the r3. The oil is pumped from the tank and pumped back into the tank. There is 2 oil pumps in the R3' innards. As far as dealing with someone named 'Dink', well, around here that goes for something else.
 
Flip, yeah, I understand about the two oil pumps, I just don't find it harmful (unless someone really brings up a good reason why) if the oil in the oil tank is above that maximum mark on the dipstick. My Rocket is running fine, but the oil is about a guarter inch above that mark.
