I received a phone call from a friend down in San Diego, telling me I needed to get back down there and ride Baja with him. We used to both ride BMW GSs but he wrecked his in Baja and replaced it with a Yamaha 250 off road bike. I checked them out and they are way too small for me but I happened on this very nicely done 2008 KLR and got it for a song, about $1200 less than any used 250 in the area.
The 2008s had some issues but the original owner did some mechanical upgrades in addition to the Baja La Paz headlight, the bars, the Ascerbis hand guards and front fender and the gas tank. It has under 6K original miles. I rode it for the first time yesterday after installing the spare lower seat that came with it. I only nearly dropped it once when my right pant leg caught on the foot peg, a real Yikes! moment as I started to fall over into a ditch. It's very lightweight, runs strong and shifts very smoothly.
I've been whining about my new knee and my 71 year old knee but I'm starting to feel pretty good so decided it was time to do something stupid again, like riding off road in Baja.
It also came with some side racks and a nice set of dry bag saddlebags along with a large tank bag.
