no helmet law

I have lived here in Utah now for about 6 mounths and I still can't get over there is no helmet law.
And I have notice that 9 out of 10 riders do not have a helmet and notice that there on a Harley, and other bikes I would say 2 out of 10 has no helmet.
Does Harley motorcycles offer more protection? Or are most of them just crazy?
I think riding a motorcycle is dangerous enough you hear so many sad stories why would people take the wisk with out wearing a helmet? and why are they mostly Harley guys and woman?
Would any of you guys ride with out a helmet on?
I seen one guy he had a mortorcycle jacket on with armour and pants with armour with no helmet I would think the head would be the most inportant think to protect

Man if I had to ride with helmets, body armor, special gloves and boots and stuff, I think I would just stay home. Yes there are times I wear a helmet(mostly not), but that's when I choose. We have enough laws and restriction on everything we do. I rode in a box while getting my EMT and spent several years as a firefighter, I have seen some wrecks, bikes and cars, bikes and bikes, bikes and trees, bikes and ditches etc some with helmets some with out. Some walked away some never got up. I am also a Safety Professional with several years as a Safety manager so I understand PPE very well, but I got to tell you Brother, I understand freedom even more, I don't ride to be wrapped in a safety cocoon, I ride to feel the wind, to unwind, to experience the feel of being in control of the machine. Motorcycle riding is inherently dangerous, that's what it is, if anyone feels better wearing all the gear God Bless more power to you please do, but please don't, do not condemn judge or look down on those that choose not too. Hey honestly, I prefer my wife to wear a helmet when on back( when we take a long ride) sometimes, and she likes it because it protects her hair, I like it cause maybe it increases the odds one of us will go home to the kiddos should 2 up end up 2 down, but hey that's my call.

While I choose to ride with a helmet, that choice has been taken away by the nanny state government of Virginia. I'd rather have the choice.

For instance, if I were in a state park at my campsite and the showers are 1/2 mile away, I'd like to have the choice to sit my lazy ass on my bike and putt up to the showers without having to put a helmet on.

Riding without a helmet definitely plays into the Harley "lifestyle", whatever that means. My oldest brother is a hard core Harley rider in Texas and he will not ride up here to Virginia to visit because we have a helmet law. I pray for his well being and hope to never get "the call" that he's gone down.

Bottom line is that I wish that I had the choice even though my choice is to wear one.

If you don't wear a helmet, you just shouldn't be eligible for emergency treatment. Don't you think they should leave you free to die in a ditch?

Frankly, what *I* choose to wear or not wear is none of your or anyone else's business, or the government's, as far as I'm concerned. The only exception to that rule is when it involves minors. It needs to be mandated that parents protect their kids until the kid is of age and can decide for themselves.

That said, I choose wear protective gear.

p.s. You don't have have to wear a helmet in Florida, but if you don't have a helmet on and you're pulled over, you better have medical listed on your insurance card; else you get a ticket.

choice and freedom is nice, thats why we will fight for our freedom , I will wear my helmet and a nice jacket for protection just in case and still feel the freedom and the wind and some times I will wear a half helmet, but to not have a halmet on you can just be at at a stop sign and fall over and hit your head could be killed or get a concussion, I just think with all the crazy divers out there the head is the most inportant thing to protect, I would think if your not going to wear any pretection gear that we would at least wear a helmet.
But would like to no why its mostly harley riders?
I asked my brother if he would not wear a helmet and he said he would not and I asked him why and he said if he was riding a Harley he wouldn't just to fit in, and I said so if they all started to jump off a bridge would you? he said no, I'm not sure if I beleave him

You're right not to believe him. There's video evidence on You Tube showing that he (being a Harley rider) would indeed follow right to the end. I'm at work right now so can't access it, but search "Harley on the Dragon". There's a video that is shot from inside a van that shows a pirate on a full dresser Harley that passes them and goes right off into the ditch and his buddy behind him follows him right into the ditch.

If you're using public resources and liable to dump health care and other costs on the public, you have to be willing to curtail your freedom. Otherwise, ride in your back yard.

That sounds like something our knee-jerk decision making legislators would say. It's an old and non-logical argument. That scenario is not even a fraction of the burden on public health.

Besides, if that's the case, then anyone eating at McDonald's or stuffing their pie holes with similar crap had better not expect my tax dollars to pay for their health bills. Smokers, alcoholics, drug addicts, etc... that goes for you too! And, I better not catch anyone doing dangerous activities like riding bicycles without helmets, sky diving, rock climbing, etc.... Oh, and if you've been dumb enough to work in a coal mine for 20 years, don't come crying about being eaten from the inside out by cancer.

Where do you want to draw the line?

None of these activities are illegal, even though they might be dangerous. if you live in a state without a helmet law, then you're obviously free to ride free. The public has implicitly accepted your liability. If you live somewhere else with a helmet law, the public is telling you it doesn't want to deal with your brains all over its roads.
