I too had been experiencing starter issues especially under hot conditions.Hit the starter button and hear the starter click but not turn the engine over. If I put it in in gear and bumped the engine it would kick in.Well this week I did the starter replacement with the Toyota starter and all seemed well, finally I thought the problem was solved! However on Saturday I took the Rocket for a ride it was a day about 90 degrees out. And it happened again! CLICK! Enough already! With wiring diagram in hand I began to chase down the problem. Here is what I found... At the starter relay there is a feed wire that is blue and yellow. I discovered that when the click appeared there was a reduced voltage reading to the relay. That blue and yellow wire receives its power directly from the ignition switch after it passes through the fuse block. If I took a jumper wire directly from the battery by passing the ignition switch and the fuse block and touched it to the blue and yellow connector the starter would stop clicking and immediately engage. I am confident this is the same problem many of us have been chasing. Over the next couple of days I will be investigating what the cause is of the reduced voltage and will post again. Hopefully this will prove to be valuable information for others.
I just clean mine yesterday as I have developed the same problem once and a while when its hot. Curious as to if it has anything to do with the contact problem with the plunger as you found on yours IAN.
I have had this problem for the last couple of years. Tried cleaning the contacts on the starter
problem came back. New battery problem came back. Switched starters from my classic to my
touring problem came back. If you are getting reduced voltage on a wire from the ignition switch
I would say it is the switch. I have a new one and was going to try it next as I did have a problem
with it till I changed to the headlight relay kit

Wheels I am a little confused are you saying you did not have the problem before you installed the relay kit or you had the problem prior to the relay kit installation.
Chris I did clean the starter button thinking corrosion might be a factor next I will try all the plugs under the tank. Not much time as the wife mentioned something about taking Gracie out for a spin.
Warp I had an issue with the switch. The headlights stayed on because the terminals melted
together keeping the headlights on. I seperated them and then got the relay kit. About a year later
the starter issue started so I am thinking the switch was over loaded and based on what honker
found it is probably the switch. After switching starters I am certain my problem is not the starter.
I think now I'm confused
Ok I was the one who was confused. My 06 is still on the original switch haven't had the issue sense I clean the contact switch on the throttle grip. Must admit I did put the bike on a charger because I could not remmember the last time I charged it. I think it was a couple months ago. Anyway so far so good on the starting had her out today then Gracie and the wife. Now I think its time to bring out the beast and rip some roads up. I seen a lot of sport bikes out and it would be nice to feed on a couple
