R3 Classic
Went for a 400km ride today.
As I entered the on ramp and and wound on a heap of throttle in 2nd gear, I glanced at the RPM and saw it fall from 5500 to zero - bike still going strong. Once I got off the motorway stopped and checked - speedo still stuck on 100kph
Pretty cool really - sitting in the garage with the engine off doing 100kph :?
Checked all fuses and all OK
Everything on the bike seems to work EXCEPT the instruments
That is no blinker, no neutral or high beam "idiot lights"
No odometer readings
Doesn't do the old all lights sequence thing on startup either
The yellow illumination lights DO work though

Does anyone have any ideas???
It is a late 06 and still under warranty, but I don't want to lose it for a week at Triumph if it is something simple
Any advice welcome

It sounds like a loose block connector on the end of the wires coming from the clocks to under the tank. Or an ignition switch short. I had the trip meter and rev counter fail on my bike. I tried the spare key and it worked fine. Put the old key back in and it has worked ever since? :?

To me it sounds like a bad ground.

The ground for the instrument illumination and for the warning lights/ speedo / tach are not the same. They are all black wires.

Check the ones at pin 10 and 12

BTW the black wires at pin 5 and 6 are for the alarm.

I would:
1st Check if the wire harness has been pinched at the front
2nd Check the connectors
3rd Check ground and back track.
4th Ask for help lol

Thanks to all who replied
Did all the suggested checks etc
Speedo still on 100kph
Looks like a visit to Triumph :( :( :(

Sorry for not getting back.
Have been flat out on another project (ultralight aircraft)
Now flying after 10 years building
4 days a week for the last 2 years.
Anyway I digress.
The diagnosis at Triumph was the instruments were Ok and the problem was the sender unit on the gearbox.
Another week or so and then another trip to Triumph and guess what - it isn't the sender - so another couple of weeks and the speedo gets replaced.
Thankfully all under warranty and now all works OK. :D
Also got the new tune whether I wanted it or not - only diference is it idles a bit higher
Anyway the bike is great. Second only to flying
Thanks to all who offered help
