[Jan 3, 2015] 2nd Annual Run to the Keys (Key West, Florida)

Lived in Florida for 24 years and never made it to the Keys. Maybe next year. It looks like yous guys had a great time.

We had a great time. Since we arrived home several people have seen pictures and want to go next year, but most are a little intimidated by the long stretch of cold, rainy, boring interstate highway so we have been kicking around the @Joesmoe idea of heading down to Miami on Amtrak and then riding the 100 miles or so to Key West next year. The best part of the ride is the South Florida portion...the rest is just transportation anyway. I guess we can firm up later in the year to see who all is ready for some sunshine in the middle of winter.

Alas, the Sunset Limited used to run between Jacksonville and Los Angeles. Hurricane Katrina wiped out the track in places between New Orleans and Ft Walton Beach, FL, and with it, the service between New Orleans and Jacksonville.

The tracks were repaired in a year with Federal help, but the Amtrak service never resumed. For several years, the Amtrak route maps showed the route with an asterisk to the effect, "We're seeking to restore service, though resumption remains unknown." Now, no mention there ever was such a service on the Amtrak web site.

Routing from Houston is possible for the diehard train buff -- Houston --> Ft Leavenworth --> Chicago --> DC --> Miami. Trip duration: 76 hours.

I've taken Amtrak several times coast-to-coast . . . has to be something you want to do . . . not about saving time or money.

Really !? That is so sad.

Not really. Been over most of the state. Just never made it down that far yet. One of the biggest things that limited our riding/driving time away from the house were our two Great Danes. I could not board them and the one that passed last spring had separation issues. It wasnt a problem when our daughter lived at home but now that shes married and has her own family we are on our own when it comes to pet sitters. But, when we retire we plan on rectifying that. 2.5 years to go..........

Is it too soon to start working the 3rd annual run to the Keys ?

Amtrak just released a $95-off fare on the Auto Train between Lorton, VA and Sanford, FL (they accept motorcycles, and their max size appears to be based on the Rocket) for trips purchased by 18 December, good for travel Nov 15 - Feb 16 with only a hand full of blackout dates.

It appears to be practically sold out, particularly the south bound leg.
