Is this normal?

Still breaking in my new Rocket Classic. Now have almost 500 miles on her.

Have been wondering about something though. Normally, one would think that all three exhaust manifold pipes would be of the same color. Mine are not. The lead cylinder's exhaust manifold is getting dark and blue, the one behind it is getting semi-dark, and the last one in the rear is hardly dark at all. I took a picture of this.

Is this normal? Is there an expected variance in fuel/air mixture between the carbs that would be represented by this?

As with any new family member we tend to overly concern ourselves with details that may be a little, out there shall we say. There is a perfectly good explanation for this oddity for which I will attempt to enlighten. As you have been breaking the beast in and not using all of the awesome power it can produce and by appearances only half of the power it seems by the appearance of the discoloration.
 
What you need to do is get some exhaust flange covers to cover that up and make it purdy and forget about it or if you sit and run it for a few minutes while it is not moving they will actually start to glow red hot I noticed this on my 05 during the winter when there was too much snow and to cold to ride but I had to hear it run and it was dark in my garage at the time it kind of mfreaked my brother out but it did no damage and once you put the flange covers on it looks beutiful and the engine looks compleate.

I am just a little mystified that all three exhaust manifolds are not producing the same, bluish hue.

...meaning that to me, a simple man; that all three carburetors are not dialed in appropriately? One would think some are lean, some are not?

Normally, blued pipes are a direct result from a lean mixture.

However, I have no plans to purchase and cover the exhaust manifolds of said beast, with the Rivco covers. I actually like to be able to look down and see the glow. Oh, and I have seen the glow. Just don't understand the temperature variance amongst them; specifically that last cylinder's exhaust manifold.

Yes, I am new to the fold, but I am still a little nervous about this.

So after I change the break in oil, and hammer this sucker, are you hinting that I will achieve full operating temperature on all three cylinders; including No 3 whick looks like it's not pulling it's fair share?

Is there a black residue like soot in the end of your pipes if there is a little all should be fine . If in doubt stop by your dealer and ask , if they are worthy dealer and appreciate your business a mechanic should be able to look at it and tell you if all is well for free if they cant, run.
 
Oh I almost forgot Yes on my two rockets this is normal you still have low miles and the third one will discolor like the rest and mine were like yours and Ive had now problems at all the only reason I bought a new 08 was to replace my 05 that got totalled in an accident.


I wouldnt really worry about it and if it bothers you just ask your mechanic at your dealer.
 


Really weird on how the third cylinder catches up on disclorization later.....

OK, under observation for now. Will talk to the tech about it as soon as i have an opportunity. Thanks for your insight and help.

Will, barbq flat black trims them out nicely. Has lasted 5 yrs and would look good on your black motor.
