Welcome!!! from Aussie land the Real Downunder. That is one mother f...... Blackbird Gawd know what you will do with a Rocket as mentioned chat with Warp he can tell you the do and Don'ts with a Rocket motor:cool:

I have lived in several parts of the U.S. and currently call the NW suburbs of Chicago home. I am a technology guy (2nd generation, in fact) and am not afraid to jump into just about any project. I have an almost 10 year old daughter who's headed into 5th grade and a spouse of about 14 years, combining that with 1 great dane and a retired racing greyhound and two cats, we have a pretty active home.

Onto bikes..

I've owned somewhere between 60 and 70 bikes over my 30ish years of riding, and built the most extreme one on the Honda Blackbird (CBR1100XX) platform. (Click here for picture and write-up.) On a forum for that bike I ran into someone selling an R3 at a very attractive price and the seller is a well known guy who takes great care of his toys so I bought a one way ticket and rode the 11 hour drive home on almost a whim. I liked it WAY more than I thought I was going to. The only part I didn't like about it was that it attracted HD riders who scoffed at it since it wasn't an HD when they got up close. That was less fun...

Anyhow, the R3 was going to be something I bought late last summer and would flip this Spring but my wife talked me into a Saturday afternoon "one last good ride" before I would list it for sale and we both looked at each other over some jalapeno poppers and she said, "Nope, that one has to stay so we can do more rides like this, I like this bike a lot."

And I replied, "Well, it can't stay in this form, you know that right?" She nodded. "It may end up with a side-car and turbo before 2013 is out."

She asked, "Which one of us rides in the sidecar?" with a furrowed brow.

"That's up to you and the little one to sort out..I'll be driving." and I winked.

So, that's where we are today. I'm thinking a PC-V and a faster spooling smaller turbo (possibly a GT-28R) tucked in behind the rear tire, where the cat would go, is the right idea. Now I just need to save up my pennies and bring the bike to have the plumbing fabricated up.

I wonder how many HP the shaft drive will hold up to?

Not sure why Harley people would be giving you grief. Back when you had a lot of WW2 vets riding Harleys, I could kind of understand the resentment towards Japanese bikes, but England was our ally in WW2. If they don't like Triumphs cause' they think Harley's are better, I say f_ckum' ! I live in a very Harley oriented town and I have never had anything but compliments on my R3. Harley's mantra has always been "bigger is better" how can they talk smack on an R3 ?

Ah but NOW, the vets are all either dead or to old to ride anymore
and the young guns who picked up the "Only a harley" mantra are so gung-ho
on h-d's, they fail to see the obivious errors in their thinking.
Made in America by Americans,,,sounds good if it was only true.
They may be assembled in america by Americans,
but considering honda owns 51% of the stock now,
and 90% of the parts are imported from Japan and other 3rd world countries,
Are they really American?
Heck Toyotas are made in america too by Americans,
so with the harley logic, aren't Toyotas American too.
twice the price for half the power,,,
yea harley.
They do have nice chrome tho,
if you're into polishing instead of riding....

Very welcoming place here!

As far as the H-D part went, I don't think I quite had the right tone..I'm not a fan of many H-D riders these days. They are either, as mentioned, proudly ignorant at what a silly bike they've overspent on, or they have some religion to H-D that I will never understand. In either case, I'd prefer they didn't walk my way at all.

A tasty dessert (R3) attracts flies as easily as poo (H-D), huh.

As for everyone else who enjoys two wheels and the people who ride them, they're always welcomed. Just leave the chip on your shoulder elsewhere.

I've started into the research for a turbo on the beast, and it looks like the TuneBoy software is all that is needed once the mechanicals are in place. It won't happen until the colder months, but it definitely seems in my future.

Last year at Bike Time, a friend of mines son had just bought a brand new Road Glide. As we were standing around looking at it, he sheepishly said "well it's no Rocket but..........."

Welcome!

I'm a bit shocked about the Harley guys; I get nothing but love from HD folks. Even had one at a light say "nice bike" and when I replied "yours too" he said (and laughed) "mine is a piece if sh*t Harley" to which I chuckled before riding off.

Shoot, they even overlook all my safety gear...

It seems like the responses I get are one extreme or the other, most are Positive. Also most are totally surprised that a Rocket is a lot cheaper than a HD.

Had a couple guys ask me the other day why I was wearing a jacket with the HD name and riding a Triumph. I told them that I have both but was riding the fast MoFo today.
