Ignore-fixed: Help - Triple K&N's installed & Overhe

Hmm, I just did the MD Triple K&N mod (minus reservoir move) and all was well. I did the ten minute tune and it was running quite smooth.

I then shut it off and restarted again for 30s to hear what it sounded like with
some gas (nice) but when I shut it off I noticed a large amount of anti-freeze
coming out the overflow hose.

I was careful to take out the air sensor and placed it into an oiled 62-1340
placed in the small opening by the water bottle.

Did I miss something? I haven't read about this happening before.

It may or may not be related but I did notice that the water level
was low last week prior to the mod and added a water/anti-freeze mix
to get it back to Max.

Oh, and I did change the oil to Amsoil 10W-40 last week as well and
installed some new rear lights. Again not sure if this is coincidence or a clue.

Any ideas?

Whan you did the !2 not 10 min tune did you wait for the fan to kick in before you timed the (12) mins. What i am asking here is did the fan kick in.
And did you alter the Tune in the ECU, because if you did not it most likely will be running lean and it is gonna run hot.

The (12) min tune must be done from cold with no throttle contact whatsoever. Run till fan comes on and goes of then let run for at least (12) mins.

I assume you don't have tuneboy or pciii since you did a 12 min tune?

Which would lead me to believe you are running very lean and hot.

Did you relocate the coolant overflow too?

However if you topped off the coolant when the bike was cold, I wouldn't be surprised to see a little go out of the overflow. It probably got pretty hot idling for 12 min.

One of the posters makes a point! You have to have the overflow for the cooling system to expand when hot and contract when cold (hence cold and hot marks). When you shut the bike off typically what happens is that the coolant quits circulating and "heatsoaks" the coolant which causes the expansion.. and out the top it comes without an expansion tank/reservoir.

So, if you do not have a reservoir, then the system will puke out what it needs to settle into a level within the radiator itself .. then it will stop. Now the question is that will that coolant level (which obviously will be lower in the radiator effectively not using the top part of the radiator for cooling) be sufficient for all your cooliing needs under all conditions. My take is probably.. I don't think the expansion space in the radiator will be huge in any respect.

Either relocated the reservoir or buy a smaller one to befit your liking.. or just let the level find itself and try it.

A1.1 Probably not but it was close.
A1.2. I read that the '05's need 20 minutes. Is that just crap?

Q2. Did you redo the ECU?
A2.1 I do have PCIII with a dynoed tune for Jars and underseat K&N.
A2.2 It has the 20054 TOR cat delete as I ecall.
A2.3 MD is sending me his old Jars+Triple K&N tune.
A2.4 I'm still waiting for the latest group buy TB to show (any day now)

Q3. Did you relocate the overflow tank.
A3.1 No, I didn't touch it (yet - I ran out of time and didn't get the tubing yesterday)

Update - apparent paranoia & operator error

OK, all appears well at this point.

I redid the "12 minute" tune.

Timeline and facts:

1. Water level cold is at MIN (I had filled it to MAX last week - looked
low and made sense at the time ;^)

2. Started bike. Idles very well.

3. Water level rises to 3/4 full (half way between MAX and overflow)

4. 8 minutes for fan to kick in.

5. Water level lowers to MAX and fan stops.

6. Water level slowly rises to same 3/4 full level; fan kicks in.

7. 5 and 6 repeat and all appears normal.

8. Waited 15 minutes. All is well - no overflow or apparent overheating
occured.

9. Waited 10 minutes.

10. Coolant level returned to 3mm below MAX.

Conclusion: Either I had overfilled coolant last week or in fact the
engine had overheated last night while it was re-learning the new
triple K&N airflow pattern.

Lessons learned: Check coolant level after warming up engine and at least one full fan cycle to let radiator and reservoir quiesce to steady state
and ensure cycle is upright. DO NOT OVERFILL RESERVOIR.

Also forgot to ask did the temp light come on? If not the engine temp was OK, and it would confirm an overfill.

No, the temperature light didn't come on when it was spewing coolant all
over my garage floor.

The weather broke (until I got twenty miles out of course) and I took
an exhilarating 50-mile break-in run.

I wasn't sure what to expect so I turned off the gear sensor mod.

I regret that I did this mod.....















in 2008 instead of 2005

I didn't expect the additional power to be as smooth and controllable
as it is - its very noticeable but civilized (for an R3).

As mentioned in another thread I had to ship my progressives back for
a rebuild and upgrade to HD springs AND I went to the darkside last week
AND it was raining for most of the ride today so I didn't do anything
extreme.

I'll be putting in a better map and getting a dyno tuneup when my TB
arrives, but it is actually running better than ever as-is.

So far there's nothing not to like.

did you remove the secondaries as well?

mine spits a little out the overflow when I drag race or other wise abuse it but thats it
