IGNITION - POWER CONSUMPTION

A
Don't alternators used in 12V systems really put out closer to 14V ?
And with voltage drops, isn't the charging circuit closer to 13V ?

And I thought a fully charged battery is supposed to be around 12.8V ?

Here again, oh to have that tachometer on the Touring. :)

Let's see:

1) headlight (single) on low: 90W
2) driving lights: off
3) heated vest & gloves (@100W) x 2 x 50%: 100W [note this is variable -- rarely, even in the coldest weather can I stand to turn this up past 50%]
4) engine coils: ???
5) cooling fan: I discount this, placing it in the same category as starting -- it'll come on when stopped, and the alternator is at lowest output, then when moving, airflow takes over, and battery is topped off
6) navigator: 1W
7) heated grips: ???
8) McCruise control: 5W
9) fuel pump: ???

At night, add in driving lights - 40W x 2: 80W
Some high beam: +40W

Dunno + another 120W
A fully charged battery should be 13.2v
2.2volts per battery cell X 6 cells

Yeah I suspect I was skating around the edges of too low last summer - all three lights on, heated grips on, heated gloves also on (it was crazy cold and my hands were unhappy) and was charging the phone constantly to boot. The bike started turning over more sluggishly at refueling stops... so I shut down one heat source. Should have more headroom this year with all LED up front.

Rule 1 - Fit Voltmeter. And these are **** good http://www.sparkbright.co.uk/battery-voltage-monitors.php

Andrew would set them up to your spec - so for example I had him turn the Green LED off after 5seconds if everything is OK

Don't really have a good place to put one, trying to keep the handlebars clean. Though I do have the Triumph stock grip heater control on there already, a giant black box. What the hell were they thinking? But I digress... may work something out next winter, thanks for the link.

Mine is in the FUGLY BLACK PLASTIC BOX for the Triumph fog-light switch - has another hole for the heated grips - It is PERFECT positioning. Photos later on - OK?

Hi Barbagris been watching this thread with interest, yes I dont have fog lights but have the FUGLY box with my heated grips, doesn't even fit the bar layout well. Why did they make it like that? Looks like an afterthought
