Will,
First, don't twist the throttle. The TPS depends on the throttle being in the full untwisted position to code the ECU.
When the temps drop below 50 or so, I will hit the starter for about 2 seconds and release. This breaks up a lot of the cold oil friction and also gets some fuel mixture into the system. I then hit the starter again and usually it fires immediately.
If the temps drop below 35, I will add the key cycle to the routine. Turn the key on, let the needles sweep, turn off the key. Repeat once more. Starter for 2 sec. Starter again and she fires right up.
I also run the Oddessy PC625. I use a Black & Decker smartcharger if it really gets cold for an extended time.
Yes, I have been hitting the started in about 2 second intervals. The third time I do it, she does start right up.
I tried cycling the key a couple of times as well, didn't seem to make a difference. I think the multiple short bursts on the starter button are the ticket.
The battery in my Rocket is over a year old (best that I can tell, it's an 08 Rocket) so I am leaning towards getting the Odessay battery as some of you have done. Which means another charger for it as well (the Yuasa's that I have are only for wet cell batteries). Hate to replace a battery that seems to be functioning properly, but with the cold months ahead; I have a habit of being proactive (sometimes too much, at great expense to my pocketbook).
Kindest regards,
-Will
