Pasted this in from another post as it applies here as well:

Just wanted to give everybody here a heads up about the fuel gauge, especially for the R3 Roadster. A month ago when I filled up, neither my fuel gauge or range indicator reset itself as it is supposed to and has not since. I drove it about 50 miles before I called the dealer cause I thought the float was just stuck or something but it never reset. After talking to corporate, my dealer told my that they have discovered a problem with a sending unit on the new Roadsters and sent a new one before I even took it in for service. Don't know if this may apply to other R3s but just food for thought. Have not yet had a chance to take the bike in to have it replaced as the dealer is not local, but hoping this will fix the problem.

fuel gauge??

There is a fuel gauge fix-it at Triumph..it is a computer adjustment,a 5 minute fix-all.Today,when I fill up it takes a minute or two to register on the gauge.Take it to the Dealer and They should be able to fix it.The fact that it registers 0 miles till fill up is an indication to me that it somehow got out of sync to me.Hopefully,I am correct but have been known to be wrong(at least 3 times...3 ex-wives to attest to my errors!)

Yes, that's exactly what I was trying to tell Cap'n Bob. It's fast, free and it works.

Sorry for the bad link! (I tried to get fancy.)

Could be a loose wire in the harness that feeds the cluster or at the cluster itself....thats what the symptoms sound like to me.....Good luck!!!!

mutt

Interesting..... The dealer said nothing about a fuel gauge fix. They did give me a piece of paper from Triumph telling them to check the clutch switch. Apparently when you pull in the clutch, the switch engages and shuts of the fuel gauge. This is to prevent misreadings due to the tank sloshing during when shifting, or so I was told. I also learned a couple of other things.

1 - If you bypass the clutch switch, you will eliminate the speed limiter. This should be handy for those of us that have R3T's. You now have a way to get rid of the speed limiter.

2 - If the switch is bypassed, the bike will not go in to closed loop mode on some models. I thought that was interesting as well. Do not know if the R3T is one of those models.

Sooooo, remembering the problem occurred after I recovered from a failed download and loaded in another tune, I decided to fake a failed download and go through the process to recover from a download and then load the appropriate tune in the bike. After doing so, guess what....? The fuel gauge is working again. Prior to going through this process, I could not get the gauge to read any higher then 3/4 full. So, does the tune have anything to do with the fuel gauge or was it pure coincidence? This may also validate some type of computer fix as previously mentioned. I am going to talk to the dealer tomorrow and hopefully get some more info. I am still going to have them order me a sending unit just in case....;)

Those are some of the most bizarre claims I've ever heard .... where did you say you got this from?

They are not "claims". What, do you think I am making this up?

Apparently, there is a lot about these bikes that most people do not know. I have a paper from Triumph, given to me by the dealer showing how the clutch switch effects the bikes in 14 different ways. I only relayed two of the 14.

If you do not believe me, disconnect your clutch switch and take your bike for a long ride. You will note the gas gauge does not update. Of course, this is for the R3T. I do not believe you have an R3T. You may also note other things happening (or not happening) as well. What did you think the clutch switch was for?

The saga continues......

On my way to the Dealer so they can check the clutch switch, the fuel gauge is reading correctly and is telling me I have about 160 or so miles left before empty. Within 3 miles of my house, the fuel gauge drops down to 115 miles left with the needle pointing from full to now just under 3/4's full.

Apparently, the gauge is still screwed up. It only worked for a short time. The gauge correcting itself after I loaded a tune must have been coincidental. The tune obviously has nothing to do with it. I spoke with the dealer about the alleged "5 minute computer fix". He says Triumph did not say anything to him about that and he knows nothing of it.

OK! No big deal. A new fuel gauge sending unit is being ordered.

BTW, Hellfire, I did not mean to come across a bit ******ety with you in my previous post. I apparently got up on the wrong side of the bed this morning. Just call me Mr. Grumpy! :D
