Kid, I had the same problem with my touring and found the cap difficult to remove.
When you finish filling up just close the cap very lightly just until it closes and the next time you take it off it will come off easily.
No gas will spill out.

OK Mac, I'll try a couple of things. Like pushing down and turning. I did not get enough time to ride today to have to fill up. I'll look around while I'm in Maggie Valley. I promise I'll leave my siphoning hose at home.

Kid, I was glad to see I was not the only one having trouble getting the lid off the gas tank. I was feeling a bit unmanly ridding the biggest bike on earth then sitting at the gas pump and not being able to open the **** gas cap! not even when off the bike, not with both hands not even with a foot propped up against the side of the bike...
I have since made sure I do not replace the cap to the point where it "clicks" and now it does not require 2 men and a small boy to open...

Does anyone know if the keyed cap from triumph for the tourer simply opens with the key, or must you still un-screw it once unlocked?

I know this thread pertains to the Touring model gas cap...but to any Standard or Classic owners, I recently ordered and replaced the "flip up" cap on my 06 Classic with an SSR screw-on cap...VERY NICE. Because I have a Corbin fairing on my bike, it was always a pain to have to remove the key to unlock the cap and then replace the key when fueling was complete. Now...all I have to do is unscrew the cap, fill her up, and I'm back on the road without fumbling with keys. Very nice product, well made, looks great on bike.

You still have to unscrew the cap with a keyed gas cap.

Well we got back Sunday, met a lot of great people. And I completely forgot to look at gas caps. Bonecarver I see your cap is a lot taller than mine. Mine also is getting easier to do. I still haven't put any "O" ring lube on it, and I think that will cure the problem I'm having. Thanks for everyones input.
Kid
