Not good news then, eh?? Next question is... WHY?? Answer... you'll probably never know for sure. Sad, but that's the way it is.

The charging system is only three components... alternator, reg/rec, and battery. If you only replace one (or two) and the third one was the culprit, you'll blow your new bits too. So bearing this in mind, and the complexity of replacing the stator, it would be VERY smart to replace all three. Then everything is new, except the wiring from reg/rec to battery... and that's simple to look at.

Aftermarket stators and reg/recs are available ... from www.RegulatorRectifier.com for example... at about 2/3 of the price of OEM, but again, bearing in mind the work involved, do you want to run the risk of a repeat job?? In this case at least, would strongly recommend OEM, and pay the extra couple of hundred bucks. The stator comes with a new harness.

You'll get best prices and service from andy@ncyyamaha.com - North County Yamaha/Triumph dealer. Stator will prolly have to come from UK - about four weeks. Don't forget to order the rear housing gasket too.

Have fun!!! I'll race you ................. :boxing:

OK now I'm really confused. Today I got my big girl out and started it. My volt meter started out at 14.4VDC cold. I let a little heat build up and started to pick up that smell again, but my meter had only dropped to 14.3VDC at this point. I took off the right side cover to look at all the wiring on the PCIII and to see if the LED meter on the unit was going up an down with throttle position(it was). I was woried that when I was checking the wiring harness for the alternator and had my battery disconnected that I wipped the PCIII's memory, but it appears as though that hasn't happened. I turned everything off and on and even when the cooling fans kicked on the voltage never dropped below 14.0x(it only varied in hundreth's). I kept it running and I kept smelling. Although fainter I could still pick it up between cylinders on the exhaust header and on top of the back half of the engine. I rode it down the street and back a couple times and all seemed fine. I bet I idled the bike long enough in the driveway to reset adaptation. I'm going to ride it to physical therapy later today and maybe again tomarrow for a longer ride as I have Monday and Tuesday off. I'm thinking that it's now beyond my scope now and I'm just going to have the stealer check it out. Seeing how it's already going to be there I'll let them do the front spring/oil swap as well. I might even have them do a quick O2 check to make sure everything is within normal range. I guess it's possible that I wasn't getting a good enough ground on the alternator harness, but I tried several points on the engine as well as checking the resistance against the recifier itself(it registered in the mega ohms). Maybe it will all turn out to be nothing(funny trons). If so thank God and it will be a break I don't usually ever get.

Three more of those left until I'm dry, Phil. Probably lay off those until Christmas time. I'm down to 201lbs from 220 a few months back and I haven't really changed my routine much other than walking and my physical therapy. Just imagine what I could accomplish with no beer, soda, or low carbs of any kind. I have noticed that lately for some reason I push away from the table earlier than I used to. My neighbor who is 78 told me that would happen one day and I laughed at him. I told him I'm 51 and still eat like a pig. Christmas goal is 189lbs. Then I'm sure come back around 195, but that's still a whole lot better starting point for the new year than 220. My ultimate goal is 165, but if I only make it to 175 I can live with that. At age 19 I weighed 165lbs and had a 28" waist. Getting old sucks.

Just remember this, blue:

I have been getting this plastic smell also ,just a whiff when its nice and warm and it also seems to be on the exhaust side.Smelt it today and on at least 2-3 other occasions. I have checked for plastic shopping bags.
It also seems to be from the exhaust side.
