2021 R3 GT
I'm new to this forum having just decided to buy a Classic r3. I currently own a Boss Hoss with a stroker motor so am interested in big power from the beginning. My buddy who owns a 2005 r3 ( ****...I love it! ) did the Hi-Po exhausts from Triumph and was disappointed until he had a Power Commander installed giving him a real 17 hp on the dyno and the popping he had on deceleration stopped.
What should I do in terms of getting the bike set up right from the get-go?...Thanks for any input....Joe

Dayz...I'm not a canyon carver ...just reasonable handling which the Standard or Classic delivers for me. The handling is a given....I just want big torque and HP. Only interested in the best "buy from the dealer" setup for now.
Understand that my Boss Hoss just can't do any real curves so the r3 is all I need.....Thanks, Joe

And I'd still consider upgrading the rear shocks as the standard Triumph shocks are a bit dodgy. The bike can skip a bit in the turns if you hit any bumps or irregularities in the road surface. And I'm not talking canyon carving here but mere freeway interchange roundabouts, etc.. A lot of us (myself included) use Progressive model 440 12 1/2" shocks but other aftermarkets are popular too.

Frankly I would recommend every single mod I've already done, as listed at the bottom of my post, except the classic bar kit and floorboards if you already are buying a classic.

Even the classic can use a bit more backsweep to the bars a la Rivco Risers if you enjoy sitting up straight with your arms comfortably bent as you ride. Oh, that is unless your arms are not proportional. If you are an Orangutan don't bother but if your arms only reach to your waist this is a definitely required mod. Probably yours are somewhere in between those extremes. :)

Jimmy...Thanks so much for the post but I don't know what many of these things are. I assume a Tune Boy is a module like the Power Commander. Is it the better of the two? What is " Fast Hombre"? The rest I can glean from experience.
I think risers from Rivco are a must for this 5'8" frame even with the Classic. I put pullbacks on the Boss and riding became much more comfortable.
Relocaton of the license plate and rear signals is a must for me!...Joe

Hi Joe.
The tuneboy isn't a module - it's software, so it gives you the ability to reprogramme the ecm, allowing you to take out the restrictions on the revs, correct the speedo error, adjust fuel/air mixture & download custom tunes, depending on your exhausts, air filter etc.

Can't say I've mastered it yet - it's a little bit complicated to get to grips with, but worth it in the end.

Thanks, Barry
Where do I learn about the Tune Boy?...Website?
****, I've been so involved with the Boss for years (8 yrs. ) that I'feel like a child with this new bike. God forbid I leave anything stock!....Joe

So Joe I would second what Jimmy said. Change the shocks yourself, very easy, and don't ride more than 3-4 months on the stockers. It just doesn't track well even on-ramps are an issue with the stock shocks, BUT if you ride it for a while first you will really enjoy the better shocks. TUNE - BOY gets my vote and if you are inclined to fool around with the bike at all, I think it is the better choice. "1FastHombre" is just the name of a computer file that contains the dyno tune that we have shared for bikes running three K&N's and Jardines. I am running it with the stock underseat filter and that results in a slightly rich mixture, but it runs so good I kept postponing doing anything else.
Most local shops are set up with Dynajet, an American company and few are knowledgeable about the Tune-boy, so if you are going to be tinkering and want to dyno your own bike, Power Commander may get the nod. For me it wasn't as good and I replaced it. Since the Tune boy is only software, nothing attached on the bike, I believe it is more reliable, but that may be debatable. Good luck, I am dying to hear your comparisoms in the months and years to come. I suspect you will find, as many here have found, the RIII is not the best at anything, but it so good at some many different things that you fall in love with it, over and over. I do believe you will never be able to match the thrill your Hoss generates when you pull the pin on it!
