Long time no post . . but I have a new question. A friends R3 has an issue with the final drive unit. I havent taken it apart yet but from the sound of it, and looking at drawings, I believe I will find that the female splined input to the drive (from driveshaft to final drive) is going to be split. I will verify this on Sunday BUT . . I cant find the part available in an exploded view anywhere. Is this serviceable or will he just need to find another final drive?

Can't help you. But....what did you find out on the mysterious sound you were having with yours?

Final drive units are non servicable and replaced as a complete unit. Also if you suspect the spines in the cup are worn take a close look at the end of the drive shaft splines as they usually go bad at the same time. I grease these splines everytime I change tires. And if you are one of them Car tire guys I would check and grease the splines at least once a year or everytime I change the oil.

It didnt wear out . . flat out snapped in half. . . at least that is what I believe has happened. Big POP sound and then no go. When you let out the clutch, you can hear spline on spline. Im sure it is the final drive, we put it in gear and rolled it. Definately from there.

Dam* that is the first one I ever heard of breaking. I have seen guys strip the slpines but never actually break one. There was a guy on the .com site a year or so ago that had a machineshop replace the bearings in his. I am not sure how well it held up but I do remember him saying it took 10,000 psi to press the spline cup back on the pinion shaft.

We are going to pull it apart Sunday, If that is what it actually is, I will post some pics.

Hey, if there is an odd way to tear something up . . . I'll find it.

I spent soem time on their site and they have a lot of stuff. I must caution you as their Touring stuff is listed as a regular Rocket. Heck they even have a picture of a Touring Rear Rim and when you click on it the other extra pictures are of a standard Rear rim.
My point is they have two rear differentials Both marked as a Rocket rear end. The touring rear differential is a 90 PCA bevel gear the standard/classic/roadster is a Larger PCA and they are not interchangeable.
Also with the excepton of the Roadster which I am not sure the splines on the drive shaft and mating differential are different between the touring and the Standard/Classic models.
