haha, so if I understand it well, this new Exedra Max tire that we see here is a BIAS tire :

and Triumph does preconise radial tires ... so then I could not put the new model on the bike ?

What is best for our Rockets ? radial or bias or does it not have importance ?

a year ago I submitted these questions to the bridgestone corp site in request of info.
a few days later, some engineer from USA actually called me on my cell on day and the best info I got from him was:
"DO NOT mix Radial and Bias."
"As an engineering issue, the tires are designed to have front and rear tread designed to complement. Primarily for water displacement. Some tires have multiple compounds and they are designed to have similar tread position attachment to the pavement".

I questioned him that the lead and following tires won't "align" in water. After the front "spreads" the water, the water flows back in front of the rear, unless you are doing "WARP" speed.
He replied, "It's designed, not necessarily function in water. Sipes and grooves are supposed to "remove" water and then the "DRY" grip will be considered. Dry conditions will keep similar grip on the road with dual compound tires."


He also acknowledged that, if I use the EXED MAX, that "BRIDGESTONE doesn't have, and is not planning on having a 16inch tire, appropriate for the Rocket."

I asked him about the MICH Commander II and the AVON and he said that "It's more important to keep the radial pair or bias pair.
Bias "MIGHT" get a few more miles but the radial should give better twist/turn performance. as a 240/50 profile tire, there aren't many options and a matched pair is best."


I'm pretty sure his comments were couched with liability concerns and he wouldn't endorse any "other" brands.
or offer any Bridgestone solutions.


I am happy with the EX MAX but will consider the matched AVONs next tire set.

Well, the concensus of those of us that have tried alternate tires completely disagree with the faceless engineering rep frm B'stone USA who purportedly said this "He also acknowledged that, if I use the EXED MAX, that "BRIDGESTONE doesn't have, and is not planning on having a 16inch tire, appropriate for the Rocket." Since the tire was not specifically homologated for the R3, I suppose he said what he said to cover the corporate derriere from any preventable liability exposure.

Art (IMFASTTOO), who has been in the motorcycle business for nearly 50 years and is a true "expert's expert", also spoke with a senior Bridgestone motorcycle tire engineer when the Exedra Max was first introduced. Although he told Art that Bridgestone would not specifically/publicly endorse the tire for use on our Triumphs (for the very same corporate aversion to liability risk, a practice, btw, that is the norm in the tire business), he was assured in no uncertain terms that the tire was absolutely safe to use on our stock wheels and that it has certain performance and wear characteristics that make it a preferential choice over most all other tires that are compatible with our rims.

I agree with you Phil, I'm onto about the fourth rear Excedra Max now and wouldn't use anything else, good milage and can't make it slide outa corners (I need a Carpenter Engine !)
Also, as you say it does get skittery when its due for replacement.

I tend to exacerbate things just a bit what with the 170 hp and 163 ft. lbs. of torque my Carpenter cams help to put to the wheel.
