Hi all. Trying to help out a friend with a problem on his 2008 Rocket III Touring. Took the bike to the cycle shop & was told the ignition switch was bad. After ordering the switch, the shop then told him his main wiring harness was bad. This is a Triumph shop that also represents other brands. Is this a common problem with these bikes, or does it sound like they are just "throwing parts" at it. Any help (thoughts, comments) would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome. You've come to the right place. No up-sale interest here.

Just a little more info will be helpful. Can you go through the symptoms in a bit more detail?

Is he getting the instrument sweep when the key is turned on?

Has he made any modifications to the bike?

Has he lifted the tank and insured that all the connections are good and tight? This has been the source of a few problem reports.

Wires breaking or becoming detached from the back of the ignition switch is a well known and common fault on the RIII. It is easily fixed, and there are several threads on here on how to fix that, and how to prevent it happening again.

Can't comment on the wiring harness - that's a new one on me.

..yes, it is a common problem..how much will Triumph be willing to pay is the question?..or the dealer for that matter..at the very least he should have them replace the ignition..and possibly some of the complete harness if they are willing to step up and pay for it..and after he gets it done, he should put this in the system.. Link Removed ..lots of us here have already done this mod..it keeps the electrical system from overloading the ignition switch upon starting the bike..let us know how he makes out..

connection correction
takes the load off the switch full time ,when starting the bike theres a lockout relay which cuts the power to the lights when you hit the starter button fitted already, you can make your own EBkit for a fraction of the cost its easy the only bit you have to butcher is the short tails to the bulbs to power the relays

............ you can make your own EBkit for a fraction of the cost its easy the only bit you have to butcher is the short tails to the bulbs to power the relays

You can also do it with one relay and one cut wire under a side panel, about an hours work - all necessary access by lifting seat and one side panel.

eb take two
theres one fault i can see with this kit it only has one fused supply so if the fuse pops for any reason your left with no lights better to have two ie h beam and l beam keeps ole joe lucas prince of darkness away
