Cleaning should work, I used to have to cycle the kickstand too on occassion to get the bike to start, but I did a thorough and detailed cleaning of the bike including the kickstand area and have not had any problems with it since, only the clutch switch that I have now bypassed, and of course the starter relay.

Although a new switch/kickstand will help it will also get crudded up soon enough. I started having problems with the kickstand switch in my first year of Rocket ownership.
