sparky - I was talking to John Y last night, he told me about your little problem....first time iv heared this one too. £1700 for a new box  you should get Sonia to talk to Grinnell, i know he's got a few spare ones...

Hmmm...interesting!

The pictures remind of a problem early Landrover 230 transfer boxes had. The mainshaft and the gear would wear just like that with the same colour debris until the splines on the shaft just wore off and you lost drive. It was preceded by the tell tale transmission "clunk". The problem with the Landrovers was simple....no lubrication. The fix was a modified cross drilled transfer gear which allowed oil to reach the shaft splines. I wonder what the fix on the R3 could be....maybe a periodical strip down of the shaft and re-grease it.

Sparky my dealer said he'd submitted my warranty claim for the same problem and Triumph initially denied it. Then I told my dealer I wanted the bike back as I was taking my business elsewhere from now on to a dealer who will stand up for me. I also pointed out that more than 3500 r3 owners.com members were very interested to hear how Triumph would handle the matter and I think that was the key that unlocked the door because my dealer said he spoke by phone with Triumph rep (and told him R3owners.com is involved and to look at the posts on this site about this problem) and the rep agreed to comp the parts. Did my dealer really submit the claim before he talked to me? I don' t know. Some of the members seem to think my dealer is full of crap. Any way Triumph seems to stand up and listen when an owner says he's associated with this fine group. Others who do not mention r3owners apparently have much less clout and no bargaining power.

drive shaft -bevel box

Hi guys. well after reading about the dry splins etc i just opened mine up to lube. Well what a mess what grease that was in there is now almost coal so i cleaned it all up and guess what. the drive shaft splins and bevel box drive are half worn out.
How did you other guys get on with Triumph coming to the party with the parts .

Peter,
Just MAKE SURE they see your R3owners.com patch when you walk through the door.
They'll know you're NOT alone, and their service and handleing of the situation for you WILL get posted, along with the results.
Good PR vs. bad PR worldwide.
Can either make or break a dealership...
Good luck.

I dodged the bullet thanks to Peter pointing this out earlier this morning. Mine is greased and back together its a snap and I will be doing it everytime the wheel is off.
Thanks Peter :D
