Having my first real problem with my '05 R3. This morning the dials swept, lights came on then when I hit the starter a loud click and all went dead. Thought it was a battery issue so charged it all day and tried again after work and the same thing. When I turn the ignition off and on multiple times it will go through the normal routine each time, but after the starter is hit and the click is heard it takes several minutes to reset and show any signs of powering up. Bike has less than 3000 miles and the battery is fully charged with clean terminals. Anyone else experienced this and what do you think is next? Granted work is only 1.5 miles each way, but riding her there and back is the best 5 minutes of the day! Help please.

first off, check the simple things, are your terminal tight? there are a couple threads on this, it could be a loose battery terminal
loose starter cable, also check all your fuses to see if they are good and in properly.

there coudl be an issue withthe clutch lever disconnect/sidestand switch, gear position sensor, or the engine kill switch. ( those darn safety features that keep you from starting it in gear and falling over)

good luck!!

This sound like a clear cut example of an ignition switch failure, especially on an 05. Those were the exact symptoms of mine, and ScotinExile, and...

Reg is right that you should do some of the basic checks, especially the battery connections for corrosion. I would check the kill switch but if it was bad then you wouldn't get the tach sweep.

OK, I've done the basic checks and everything is tight. Ignition switch failure is making sense since it doesn't want to reset until the key is turned all the way over to parking lamp mode and then back to ON. Is the LOUD click I'm hearing out of the right side cover also a symptom of ISF??? Could that loud click possibly be a relay overload? Thanks for the input.

+2 I had the same problem with my '05

I've not been conviced it's the ignition switch and because of the loud click coming from the starter relay I took a $12 gamble and ordered one up. Will let you know tomorrow how it works out. Thanks again for the response.

Well, I've experienced alot of bad battery symtoms in my day, but not this one. Although my trickle charger showed a full charge, there must have been a bad cell. Put a new one in and I'm baaaaaack in the saddle again!

:-D
Might be worth fitting that new relay anyway, just to be on the safe side. Last thing you want now is the old one to fail sooner rather than later!:eek3:
