What a bugger, went down a curb, hit the oil drain plug housing, noticed oil sepage as a crack
had developed, not a drama but it does leak to a small degree, has anyone had this problem
and is there a solution other than replacing the complete sump plate ?

Hardbone.

There might be a liquid metal you could use, dremel the crack a bit if you can and back cut to lock the filler in. The sump is not very thick from what I've heard so due care when grinding, you could also get it welded by someone with alloy skills or it may be cheaper to buy one. I was just lookin at the sump the other day thinking about a guard, I thought why do I need one? And there's a good reason right there. Loading the bike on to pickups and trailers would be another reason, looks like my next project.

I did the same thing while driving onto a flatbed trailer (rear tire slipped off the ramp and whacked the oil plug - fresh $13/qt oil all over the ****ed place). The damage was more than your crack in that it knocked the plug out and broke the rim that held it.

My obvious solution was to R&R the sump plate. A new one through the stealership was about $325 without gasket. I got a replacement from Pinwall Cycle Parts for $115 including gasket and shipping and bolts. It made a bad day a whole lot better.

I just looked over the Pinwall eBay store and found 8 pages of stuf for R3's. Unfortunately I didn't see a sump cover. Keep looking - you'll find one.
