It depends on where your bike was originally purchased at. For example California bikes would have a catalyst and the other 49 states would not. I asked the same question a while back and was told you can look at the cat (left side I think) if it has a "C" then it has a catalyst. If it has an "N" then it means it is a non catalyst. Either way I think they all have several "chambers" in them restricting flow.
 
If I remember correctly the "N" looks like a "Z" because it is mounted sideways on the bike.. And the empty catbox is full of chambers and is very heavy.
 
That is what I heard also.... Just buy the cat bypass :D:D... You don't need no stinkin' clean air.......
