I had a very small oil drip & without thinking I assumed it was a drain bolt. So set my torque wrench to 25Nm. Feeling no resistance as it went in beyond flush I stopped.
Now realizing it is not a drain bolt I'm concerned about not knowing what I don't know. I have been told by Triumph parts that it is 50mm long but they don't know what it is or what it does. Same with their service dept. I'm afraid to do anything with it for fear of restarting the drip or hurting the threads.

Wow Martin! You really went above & beyond! Thank you so much for taking the time to answer & in such a thorough manor. I really appreciate the Fowler link too. I've bookmarked it for future reference. Thank you again! & now I'm off to get some new shoes installed, along with oil & filter with the peace of mind that a helical will not be necessary on the bolt in question. Whew! 🤗

Actually further to this, I was trying to work out how the plug had one flat side and one hex, as shown in the photo of the part itself

when on my sump plate I see hex on the inside and outside. It dawned on me that two plugs are used per hole, done up tight to each other with a tool each side. The diagram shows two lots of part 2 from this list Sump & FittingsEng No 217501 - Triumph ROCKET III, CLASSIC & ROADSTER | Triumph ROCKET III, CLASSIC & ROADSTER Sump & FittingsEng No 217501 Mit schneller Lieferung an Deutschland | Fowlers Parts

So how much did you wind in the one on the outside? If you went too far, the one inside could of popped out and be loose in the engine lower. Looking at mine it was well in so a turn or two shouldn't matter. Only way to really know is to remove the engine bottom plate and check. I'll have a check how far the external one is recessed.

It's a pipe plug, used to close/plug a hole. Same type plugs used in oil galleys etc., may be a different size.

Good idea to drop these sumps, 20 bolts, maybe a gasket, put in a new oil non return valve, clean screens, look whats goin on in your engine. Inside of that sump is a story to tell. Plugs arnt flush on mine.
